COE partners with CTAUN for conference on water-related issues  The College of Education has partnered with the Committee on Teaching About the United Nations (CTAUN) to host "Water: Global and Local Challenges," a day-long conference aimed at promoting the discussion of water-related issues.
The conference, scheduled for March 17, 2012, in the COE (30 Pryor St., Atlanta), will feature a keynote speech followed by break-out sessions on topics ranging from climate change and pollution issues to conservation education and water in politics. Guest speakers at these sessions include Chesley McNeil, 11Alive News meteorologist; Cherilynn Morrow, Georgia State University astronomy professor; Jo Adang, coordinator of the Georgia chapter of the Water Education for Teachers (WET) Project; William Yotive, project manager of the United Nations Global Teaching and Learning Project; Jennette Gayer, legislative advocate for Environment Georgia; and April Ingle, executive director of the Georgia River Network. Conference co-chairs Gwen Benson, COE associate dean for school and community partnerships, and Susan Ogletree, director of the COE's Educational Research Bureau, said the event is designed to bring together speakers with different areas of expertise to facilitate a conversation about one of the world's greatest natural resources. She has conducted policy research studies for a number of governments, including on the recruitment and retention of school leaders for the Scottish Government and on teacher professional development for the Training and Development Agency for Schools in England and the Turkish Ministry of Education. The Blurring Boundaries Conference, co-sponsored by the United Nations Academic Impact and the Committee for Teaching about the United Nations, will offer two days of panel sessions, symposia and keynote addresses, allowing scholars and leaders to gather and exchange international research on child development, health and mental health, schooling, indigenous education, neuroscience and other relevant topics, which will inform the partnership work of universities worldwide in their educational development efforts.
