COE dean to serve as keynote speaker at international education conference in South Africa College of Education Dean Randy Kamphaus will serve as one of the keynote speakers at the 15th annual International Educational Association of South Africa (IEASA) Conference, scheduled for Aug. 31-Sept. 3, 2011, in Durban, South Africa.
Hosted by the Durban University of Technology, the conference brings together higher education officials from colleges and universities from all over the world to discuss issues related to education.
"The focus of my address will be on the ubiquitous global mandate for universities to assist in educational improvement efforts," Kamphaus said. "Because universities such as ours possess unusual intellectual resources, we have a particular responsibility to serve as leaders for producing positive changes at all levels of educational practice."
Kamphaus is one of five keynote speakers for the event, all of whom will address this year's conference theme: The impact of internationalization on the quality of higher education.
"I am particularly pleased to present at the Durban University of Technology because we've been working with them for several years now, and Chancellor Ela Gandhi was our eminent speaker for the College of Education's 22nd annual Benjamin E. Mays Lecture last year," he said.
In addition to Durban University of Technology, the COE has established partnerships with Stellenbosch University, the University of the Western Cape, North West University and several local school districts on a number of academic initiatives, including research collaborations, study abroad programs, curriculum development, outreach programs and professional development opportunities.

Continuing a Legacy
Asa G. Hilliard III, a distinguished member of the College of Education faculty, died August 13, 2007, while leading a study tour in Egypt. At the time of his death, Dr. Hilliard was the Fuller E. Calloway Professor of Urban Education and held joint appointments in the Department of Educational Policy Studies and the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education.
The COE hopes to continue Professor Hilliard's legacy through the Asa G. Hilliard III Scholarship. The scholarship is to be awarded to a graduate student interested in researching one of two topics that Dr. Hilliard addressed in his scholarship and teaching: How scholarship across the disciplines has been implicated in the "creation and teaching of racist beliefs [that] remain with us today, often wearing the cloak of scientific legitimacy"; and the development of "scholarship that advances scientific understanding of the theory and practice of educational excellence for African Americans at any level of the educational system."
Any amount donated for this scholarship is appreciated. As you donate, please keep the following in mind:
By The Numbers
With just ten contributions of $1,000,
Or twenty contributions of $500,
Or fifty contributions of $200,
Or one hundred contributions of $100,
We can raise $10,000 for the scholarship.
If you are interested in contributing to a scholarship in memory of Professor Hilliard, please contact Stephanie Douglas, COE director of development, at 404/413-8132 or sdouglas3@gsu.edu.
