Early College High School students share experiences at GSU with COE advisory board
Seventeen-year-old Paige Staten watches the morning news every day before heading off to school.
Staten, a Carver Early College High School senior, plans to pursue a broadcast journalism degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill upon graduating this spring. And her experiences taking classes at Georgia State University while enrolled at Carver will help her navigate through her college career.
"I have to admit, I was nervous to be on a college campus in classes with college kids having to complete the college curriculum," she told College of Education Advisory Board members and emeriti faculty Nov. 18 during the college's annual holiday luncheon. "I was treated no differently than my classmates. I was looked at as a college student and expected to perform as one."
The Carver Early College program, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is a partnership between Georgia State University and Atlanta Public Schools that allows high school students at Carver to take college courses and earn up to 60 college credits before they graduate from high school.

Your gifts to the COE at work...
Amy B. Windham COE Alumnus (M.S. '94) "While earning my master's degree in the College of Education's Kinesiology and Health Department, I not only gained knowledge about sports administration through my professors' instruction but I also had the opportunity work in my field, and that gave me an advantage in my career. Today, I still rely on the foundation that was built while I earned my degree."
