Looking back: The Alonzo A. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence
The Alonzo A. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence, initially housed in the Department of Educational Policy Studies, was created in 1996 to provide a city-wide laboratory for the development of excellence in urban
education. The center, currently located on the third floor of the College of Education building (30 Pryor St., Atlanta), seeks to bring together faculty who are interested in conducting research and provide services to schools in urban school systems. The center's namesake, Alonzo A. Crim, served as superintendent of the Atlanta Public School System for 15 years and was instrumental in helping desegregate Atlanta schools. He was recommended by teacher and civil rights activist Benjamin E. Mays for the superintendent position, and established the Chair of the Benjamin E. Mays Professor of Urban Leadership at Georgia State University. The Crim Center continues to co-sponsor the annual Benjamin E. Mays Lecture, which is intended to encourage the discussion of issues facing urban educational
leaders through a series of symposia, conferences and lectures. Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi and a peace activist in South Africa, will be this year's speaker.
The 22nd annual Benjamin E.
Mays Lecture is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Georgia State University Speaker's
Auditorium (44 Courtland St., Atlanta).
