COE and Georgia Perimeter College partner to offer early childhood education bachelor's degree

The College of Education and Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) have partnered to offer a bachelor's degree program in early childhood education at the Georgia Perimeter College Newton Campus. The Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) in Early Childhood Education teacher preparation program is the first bachelor's degree program offered on the campus, which opened in June 2007. The B.S.Ed. program prepares pre-service teachers to work in classrooms with children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and allows students in the eight-county service area of GPC Newton Campus a new option in completing their education and certification requirements.

"The program continues a longstanding and fruitful partnership between the two schools," said Barbara Meyers, associate professor and chair of the COE's Department of Early Childhood Education. "The new GSU/GPC 2+2 program favorably positions both institutions to meet the Board of Regents' call for 20,000 teachers by the year 2020," she added.

COE program coordinator Lynne Jordan works closely with GPC faculty and area school personnel to secure the instructional team for both pre-service teacher development and mentoring during the first crucial year in the profession.

"Field experience is a vital component of our teacher education program," said Jordan.  "Extensive field experiences allow pre-service teachers to learn how to select materials and activities that are well-suited for children at different age levels and in diverse settings.  All this experience comes in actual classrooms under the supervision of a mentor teacher as well as a university supervisor."

 Peter Leone
February 17, 2010

College of Education
Room 1030
30 Pryor Street
Atlanta, GA 30303

Presenter: Dr. Peter Leone
Topic: School-based Referrals to the Juvenile Courts: Variability across States and by Gender, 1995-2004

Dr. Peter Leone earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Iowa in 1972 and 1974, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1981. He is currently a professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Maryland.

Over the past 10-15 years, there have been dramatic changes in the ways in which K-12 schools have managed and responded to student misbehavior. Based on an analysis of juvenile court data archives in five states, Dr. Leone's presentation will address the question: Is student behavior getting worse or are we responding to it differently?

Research Wednesdays is held every Wednesday of the month. An RSVP is required to attend this event. To confirm your attendance, please contact Rosemarie Capps in the COE's Educational Research Bureau at (404) 413-8090 or erbracx@langate.gsu.edu.

 Rick Blue
 Dr. F. Richard Blue
  Alumnus and Donor(Ph.D. '75)

"Giving to the College of Education is so easy for me. I am so thankful to GSU and the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services for giving me the opportunity to obtain my formal education which has led to an exciting career for me. I truly feel that I owe the department and the College of Education because they taught me the skills to be a successful psychologist. I am so proud of my Department and would do anything to enhance its status and well being. I really will never forget my graduate education (1968-1975) and the wonderful years that I spent at GSU. It is one of the high points of my life."
