CLASS REPS

A huge thank you to all our volunteer class reps this year! If you're interested in being a class rep next year, please email castorvalleycouncil@gmail.com

NUT FREE SCHOOL!

Due to the large number of  students that have nut allergies, Castor Valley continues to be a nut free school. We ask families not to include nut items in snacks - this is for the safety of our anaphylactic children. Should you be unsure as to the contents of a food item, please do not send it. If you'd like more information on the government of Ontario's anaphylaxis policy, please click here and you can read about our new request regarding soy-based *nut* butters here

NEW NUTRITIONAL GUIDELINES

The Ontario Ministry of Education's new School Food and Beverage Policy came into effect on September 1st, 2011. For information on this new policy, please visit www.ontario.ca/healthyschools and for a great resource for nutritious lunches and snacks, visit www.eatrightontario.ca.

POP TABS

Thanks to all of you who brought in pop tabs, we were able to raise $700 and reached our goal of a 3rd wheelchair!  The tabs are recycled for cash and the proceeds sent to Ontario March of Dimes to provide a wheel chair for someone in need.

Campbell's labels for Education Program

We will continue to collect labels from Campbell's soup and other products for this program. Box is in the school lobby. For more information, contact Kim Sheldrick or see www.labelsforeducation.ca.

WHAT A WONDERFUL SCHOOL YEAR - THANK YOU!!

Thank you to all parents, teachers, staff, administration and students who participated in Council last year and to our amazing parent and staff volunteers who participated throughout the year in a variety of ways including:
  • setting up and running the alternative lunch and milk programs with the help of student lunch monitors. Every day a parent volunteer came to the school to distribute milk into class coolers!
  • coordinating and helping out at school events such as Christmas Shopping Day, the Used Book Sale, TalentFest and Fun Night, and coordinated fundraisers like MacMillans, Entertainments Books, Senators Tickets, Samko Toy Sale and QSP magazines
  • coordinating and helping out with tulip planting in the Fall with 4 CVES classes
  • reading with students in the JK/SK Early Literacy Program and the Parent Supported Literacy Program for students in grades 1 to 3
  • helping coordinate the Playground Activity Leaders in Schools (PALS) program
  • introducing the Roots of Empathy Program to our school this year
  • enticing Majic100 to present their *No More Bullies* campaign at our school in April!
  • initiating Crazy Hair Day to support CHEO
  • inviting Tina Daniels to spend a day at our school educating our students, teachers and parents on how to create a safe and caring school
  • coordinating Family Volleyball Night
  • helping supervise students on field trips and during Terry Fox National School Run Day and Jump Rope for Heart
  • driving students to and from various special events such as music concerts and sporting events
  • initiating the purchase of a full set of ukuleles for the school
  • assisting classroom teachers with photocopying and the preparation of classroom materials
  • maintaining the emergency telephone network
  • helping out with registration and child care at our parent information evenings

This year, CVES Council achieved the following:

  • welcomed 29 voting members and approximately another 15 non-voting members
  • on average, had about 20 people attend its monthly meetings, including our principal and a teacher representative, and also had special attendees like our school trustee, Mark Fischer, our music teacher and our librarian, etc.
  • maintained an email database for school-wide emails, and sent out a variety of both Council-related and school-related throughout the year
  • used monies raised to fund many items and activities that are no longer in school budgets. This year, we committed to funding over $11,000 in ad hoc requests! These included the Intermediate Stock Market Challenge, replacing phys. ed equipment, library book replenishment, Mathletes, the purchase of Ukuleles for our music program, purchasing listening centres and leveled readers for Grades 1-3, purchasing outdoor play toys and funding field trips.
  • financed the classroom teacher & staff resource fund
  • put on 6 parent information sessions: Literacy at Home, Internet Safety, Bullying Awareness and Division Transition Sessions. These were funded by the Parents Reaching Out Grant, which Council has applied for (and has been awarded!) the last 3 years!
  • Maintained the Parent Class Rep system, with a parent representative for each homeroom class to create a more informed and engaged parent community
  • Hosted the Staff Appreciation and Student Volunteer Appreciation Lunches

CVESC is a committed group of parents who strive to create a positive learning environment. You probably know someone who's on School Council or who volunteers at the school, and we're always thrilled to welcome new parents - either as Council members or to help out in another way. There are many ways to contribute - while some people are able to commit to a larger role, others come to a few meetings and help out when they can, doing things they enjoy. We know everyone is busy and appreciate each and every volunteer hour!

We're making a few changes to Council next year and are hoping you'll join us! If you are interested in joining Council, helping out, or would like more information, please don't hesitate to contact anyone you know on Council, visit our website, or you can contact me

Thanks!

CVESC JOB POSTINGS :)

Class Reps

Interested in being a class rep next year? We are looking for volunteers who enjoy creating an engaged and informed classroom community - please email us if you're interested!

Publicity Coordinator

Are you a creative person? Do you have experience designing for print or just love creating fun and attractive marketing material? CVES Council is looking for an interested parent to help with graphic design projects for the 2012-13 school year. Our Publicity Coordinator would be responsible for:
  • designing posters, flyers, brochures and other publicity pieces for Council information and Council-related events, programs and initiatives (versions of these exist and copy has already been written, we just need the materials updated and/or re-designed)
  • receiving requests from, and coordinating with, our Chair, Vice-Chairs and/or the Coordinators of specific events throughout the 2012-13 school year
  • may or may not choose to be a voting member of Council and attend meetings next year
  • some availability between now and the beginning of the next school year required
If you have any questions or are interested in the role, we'd love to hear from you!
AMBASSADEURS
Thank you for everyone who sent in pop tabs this year... with your help, we were able to raise $700 for the Ontario March of Dimes for our third wheelchair!

This Spring, the grade 7 and 8 Ambassadors have been working on raising money for the "Adopt a Village in Sierra Leone" Project with Free the Children. To date, they have raised $649.12 through kitchen green bin liner sales and the lollipop pull at Fun Night. We also sold Candygrams at Valentine's Day for the grade 4-8's. Thanks for your support and for more information on the cause, please visit www.freethechildren.com.
CRAZY HAIR DAY!
This fun event was initiated by two CVES students,Tristan C. (grade 1) & Trinity C.(JK), whose family has a long standing tradition of raising money for CHEO! On June 1st, CVES students wore creative hairdos to school and collectively raised $840!!!

Thanks to all who supported
and participated in this important cause :)
CHANGES NEXT YEAR?!
If you've read the school's newsletter, you know there are a few changes to the start and end of the school day next year. For more information on these changes, click here to read the school's June newsletter.

If you'd like to see a list of next year's teacher assignments, click here and read the school's
June end (last) newsletter.

Remember that the OCDSB now supplies the school with necessary school supplies, which means buying school supplies is completely voluntary and hence we are not offering pre-packaged school supplies through Best Tools for Schools anymore. For the list of supplies supplied by OCDSB, click here and read the school's June newsletter.
CASTOR VALLEY CARES!
As you know, our CVES community is very generous, and our CVES students and CVESC raise a lot of money for charities! In this light, when we received a letter from the students at Hawthorne Public School asking for a donation to help fund their end of year school trips, we made the decision to donate $500 to help them out! To read their wonderful letter, please click here.

Next year, we'd like to both continue and expand the ways we can help schools within our school board who have less resources than CVES. If you have any suggestions, feedback or questions about this initiative, please don't hesitate to contact us!
PARENT INFORMATION SESSIONS - we'd love your input!
We're looking for ideas!! We've applied for the OCDSB's Parent Reaching Out (PRO) Grant again for next year, and would like to hear from you how we should/could put this money to good use!

This year we held our traditional sessions like Literacy at Home and the Division Transition Session, as well as bullying-related sessions like our Internet Safety Info night and our session with Dr. Tina Daniels on creating a safe and caring school.

What sort of info sessions would you like to see next year? No idea is too small or silly - we're brainstorming!

Please respond to this email, or email castorvalleycouncil@gmail.com and tell us your ideas and suggestions :)
ADOPT A CVES FLOWER BED!!
Our gardens at Castor Valley are looking beautiful this spring! Thanks to Heather Wilson, Sandra Kopmann and her mother, and Alison Reaume for weeding and helping to maintain our lovely gardens. Special thanks to Tracy Lager and her family, as well as Mme Allard, for adopting and continuing to maintain lovely flower beds in the kinder yard.
We are looking for a few more families to "adopt" one of our flower beds. This would involve weeding and maintaining one of the flower beds (basically a fall and spring clean up - about 2 to 4 hours per year). Most beds are already fully stocked with bulbs, but new ideas and creativity are always welcome!  We have several green thumbs on Council who would be willing to help/mentor a family new to gardening. As evidenced by the four classes that planted tulip bulbs last fall, our students love to get their hands dirty in the gardens!

If your family is interested in adopting a bed, or is interested in helping to maintain our gardens, please email us!
ONGOING FUNDRAISERS
  • We continue to offer on-line discounts through our website on QSP magazines - even throughout the summer - they make great gifts! When you order your QSP magazines, please make sure you use our code: 10727.
  • Need labels? Don't forget you can order Mabel's Labels directly through school council. By clicking on the Mabel's Labels widget on our website (in the right column), we automatically receive a portion of your purchase. Thanks!
