CLASS REPS

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to be a class rep this year! A complete list of class reps and their emails can be found on our Council website here.

NUT FREE SCHOOL!

Due to the large number of  students that have nut allergies, Castor Valley continues to be a nut free school. We ask families not to include nut items in snacks - this is for the safety of our anaphylactic children. Should you be unsure as to the contents of a food item, please do not send it. If you'd like more information on the government of Ontario's anaphylaxis policy, please click here and you can read about our new request regarding soy-based *nut* butters here

NEW NUTRITIONAL GUIDELINES

The Ontario Ministry of Education's new School Food and Beverage Policy came into effect on September 1st, 2011. For information on this new policy, please visit www.ontario.ca/healthyschools and for a great resource for nutritious lunches and snacks, visit www.eatrightontario.ca.

POP TABS

We are collecting pop tabs again this year. The tabs are recycled for cash and the proceeds sent to Ontario March of Dimes to provide a wheel chair for someone in need. Please send your tabs in with your child. There is a collection can in each homeroom class. To date, Mme LaCharity's class has collected the most, followed by Ms. Reeb's class and Mme Beaupré's class. Keep collecting!

Campbell's labels for Education Program

We will continue to collect labels from Campbell's soup and other products for this program. Box is in the school lobby. For more information, contact Kim Sheldrick or see www.labelsforeducation.ca.

*PALS* at CVES!
We are pleased to report that PALS training has been completed!  27 grade 5 students took the 2-day training from the Public Health Nurse and are ready to implement this wonderful program in the new year! In case you're not familiar with PALS, please read about it below or click here.

PALS stands for Playground Activity Leaders in Schools and is a leadership program that encourages all children to participate in activities regardless of their gender, size, or ability.

A Public Health Nurse trains volunteer staff and students to implement the program. School staff then supervise the program, with the Public Health Nurse providing ongoing support. Students from grades 4 to 6 with leadership qualities are trained to act as playground activity leaders for younger students. These students will plan and lead fun and safe activities on the playground.

Schools who run the PALS program have observed:
  • increased physical activity in participating children
  • decreased playground conflict and bullying
  • increased leadership ability and self esteem in students through skill development in leadership, communication, problem-solving, organization, and cooperation
  • increased community building between primary and junior grades
ROOTS OF EMPATHY at CVES!
CVES has been invited to participate in a program called Roots of Empathy (ROE). This program teaches children about feelings - their own feelings, and the feelings of others. The way the program works is once every three weeks a baby is brought in by his/her parents, and the students, along with a trained ROE instructor, will gather around the baby and watch him or her develop over the months.

The children are asked to predict and cheer when their ROE baby reaches developmental milestones of the first year (rolling over, teething, sitting, crawling). The ROE instructor also coaches the children in observing the baby and reading the cues the baby gives as to how he/she is feeling: "Is the baby happy or sad?" "How can you tell?" and the instructor uses this discussion as a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel: "Do you smile when you're happy?" "How can you tell if your friend is happy or sad?" The hope is that they learn to understand how other people are feeling and learn empathy. The ROE instructor also visits the classroom before and after each baby visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit.

For more than ten years across Canada and internationally, the program has helped thousands of children learn respect and care for one another with the lessons learned through their Roots of Empathy baby.

The program is slated to begin in the New Year - more info to come - in the meantime, you can read more about the program here.
EMC NEWSPAPER STORY
CVES was featured in the EMC (Manotick/Winchester) last week to celebrate our Playground Improvement Project success! You can read the article here.

SOCIAL NETWORKING SAFETY 101 FOR PARENTS!
On November 28th, Paul Davis, an Internet safety expert, hosted 3 presentations at our school. Two age appropriate presentations were held during the day to grades 4 - 8, and then a presentation in the evening was given to parents.

His presentation, entitled *Social Networking Safety 101 for Parents*, was very well received by all parents who attended. Feedback from both students and parents was that Paul gave very compelling and informative talks about how to keep yourself (and your children) safe online. He had some very eye-opening (and frightening!) statistics, gave some very helpful safety tips, and presented with a very straightforward manner that everyone appreciated.

Hopefully you heard all about it if you have a child in grades 4 to 8!

This presentation was part of our Parents Reaching Out (PRO) grant *Castor Connections* series and was presented in partnership with Castor Valley Elementary School Administration.

LUNCH/RECESS MONITORS - update!
In our November newsletter we outlined the need for Lunch/Recess Monitors, especially for our primary grades. The OCSDB was prepared to pull funding for these paid positions if we couldn't fill them, and although we had one person apply (THANK YOU!) and accept the position, and we have a bit more coverage, unfortunately it was not enough to keep all our funding, which has now been scaled back for this, and future years.
GRADE 7 & 8 AMBASSADEURS

Thanks for the outpouring of support for The Snowsuit Fund! Approximately 15 bags of winter clothing and boots were donated. Thank you to our grade 7 and 8 Ambassadeurs for initiating this project.

On Friday December 2nd, the Ambassadeurs held a pancake breakfast for all intermediate students to raise money to ship English books to elementary and secondary schools in Zimbabwe. Many members of the Ambassadeurs arrived at 8am and flipped pancakes for many hours. The students raised $470, which is almost exactly the amount needed for shipping. Big thank you's to Mr. Docksteader of Produce Depot for providing the apples that went with every meal, and to Heather Wilson who supervised and cooked the whole morning. In attendance were Ray and his daughter. Ray was our evening custodian until recently. He emigrated from Zimbabwe two years ago and attended the schools who'll be benefitting from our books.

Merci,

Les Ambassadeurs

SPECIAL SPONSOR SECTION
It took more than 2 years of planning and fundraising, hundreds of volunteer hours, amazing community spirit and remarkable generosity from various local businesses and families, but as of October of this year, our students are now happily climbing and playing on our 2 new play structures!

We are so grateful to every family, parent and business who donated their time and/or money to our Playground Improvement Project, and are especially appreciative to the following three sponsors who gave substantial donations that helped make our playground project a reality:

PLATINUM SPONSORS

Tony Greco's

Empowering the children of today to live a healthy and happy life - that is the underlying messaging of Tony Greco's Foundation to Fight Childhood Obesity.

The Ottawa fitness guru started the Foundation in 2008 in an effort to put the spotlight on childhood obesity - and get families talking about ways they could improve their overall health and fitness. The Foundation focuses on key areas including: educating parents and children on fitness and nutrition; providing funding for personal training or nutritional costs for low income families and working to build parks in subsidized areas of our community to encourage children to exercise and play outdoors.

Since 2008, Tony's Foundation has invested more than $40,000 in fitness equipment, coaching services and nutritional consultations to families - and in January of this year they made a surprise $10,000 donation to our school in support of our Playground Improvement Project.

"I was honoured to be able to help this amazing school community reach their fundraising target - so they could move forward with building the play structure," said Tony Greco. "This is a terrific project that is going to benefit the overall health and fitness of the children for years to come."

D&G Landscaping Inc. is a locally owned business located in Greely that specializes in commercial landscape construction. It was founded in 1987 by Doug and Greg Clunie, brothers who grew up in Manotick, and now has over 100 employees.

D&G has provided site preparation services and coordinated playground equipment installations for a number of schools and City of Ottawa playgrounds over the past several years, and was very happy to help out Castor Valley Elementary where Doug's three daughters attend school. Doug's extensive knowledge and experience, along with his dedication, really helped get the job done.

We are grateful for D&G's generous donation of heavy equipment and labour, and for tapping into their network of business contacts, whose donations helped reduce the site preparation costs.

 GOLD SPONSOR

Scotiabank contributes to causes around the world - and makes a significant impact here in our community. At Scotiabank the goal is to 'make a difference'; and in 2010 they did just that - contributing more than $50 million dollars in donations and sponsorship with a large portion of those funds going directly into communities where Scotiabank staff live and work. Scotiabank employees have also contributed more than 324,000 hours of volunteering and fundraising time to local charities in support of health, education and social services.

The Scotiabank branch in Osgoode has been a continued supporter of Castor Valley Elementary School - and in 2011 they supported the Playground Improvement Project with a contribution of $3,000. Through the Scotiabank Bright Future Program, charitable efforts are aimed at being relevant and responsive to the needs of the local community at a very grassroots level. The Bank will match funds raised by two or more Scotiabank employees to assist qualifying community-based organizations, non-profit or registered charitable organizations. The funds raised are matched up to a maximum of $5,000.00 per initiative per year.

Scotiabank Osgoode is located at 5677 Osgoode Main Street in Osgoode. More information on their Bright Future Program can be found here
