NUT FREE SCHOOL!
| |
Due to the large number of students that have nut allergies, Castor Valley continues to be a nut free school. We ask families not to include nut items in snacks - this is for the safety of our anaphylactic children. Should you be unsure as to the contents of a food item, please do not send it. If you'd like more information on the government of Ontario's anaphylaxis policy, please click here.

FALL FUNDRAISING
| Back by popular demand - Entertainment Books are being sent home in backpacks this week!!
Last year, we fundraised heavily to raise the funds required to replace the primary and junior/intermediate play structures. This year we are bringing back our most popular fundraising initiatives, but want to stress that participation in these fundraisers is completely VOLUNTARY. We still wish to raise funds to support ongoing School Council initiatives (e.g., new library books, Mathletes, grade 7&8 stock market challenge, information technology, special presentations), but our fundraising goals are much less aggressive this year.
We will continue our tradition of selling MacMillan's Gourmet Frozen Food in November (forms to be sent home early Oct - pick up Nov 24th) and to offer on-line discounts through our website www.castorvalley.ca on QSP magazines, Mabel's Labels and Senators tickets. We also look forward to continuing popular past events such as Christmas Shopping Day, our Used Book Fair and Fun Night! |
|
SCHOOL PHOTO DAY
| Earl Havlin Photography will be in our school this Thursday, September 22nd to take school photos. Proofs will be sent home that same day in backpacks. Retake Day is Monday, October 24th.
Family Photo Night will be that evening (same prices as school photos) from 4:30pm - 7pm. No appointment required, and pets welcome!
If you are able to help out during the day, we need 2 parent volunteers in the morning, and 2 volunteers in the afternoon. Email Luisa Kuca if you can help |

HELP RE-STOCK THE LIBRARY!
| After a successful renovation over the summer, our librarian is working hard to get the library ready for borrowing! She needs help putting books back on the shelf on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week (Sept 20th - 22nd) - any parent help during school hours would be welcomed and greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, you may email our librarian, Coreen Atkins, directly.
Thanks to everyone who attended the bi-lingual Scholastic book fair last week. The event brought in over $5000, which gives the school a credit of $3500 to buy books for the library! |

TERRY FOX NATIONAL SCHOOL RUN DAY

PLAY STRUCTURE UPDATE!
| |
Hopefully you've had a chance to check out our 2 new play structures! They were installed over the summer and look great!
Our outgoing Environmental Coordinator, Natasha Robb-Burrows, wanted to pass this along:
"A huge thank you for helping to make sunny smiles on the playstructures, so many, too many, to name indivdually! A true community effort - from the grant researchers, grant writers, fundraisers (parents and teachers who supported in and out of the classrooms), folks who donated generously, kids who submitted designs, student petition writers, local community supporters, administration and tireless school council members........... THANK YOU ALL! Enjoy your new play structures!"
The primary play structure has passed inspection and is being used by grades 1 to 3 students.
A few issues arose on inspection of the junior/intermediate play structure, and the Board is working with the equipment manufacturer/installer to resolve these issues before releasing it for students to use.

REQUESTS FOR SCHOOL COUNCIL FUNDS
| |
Teachers, staff and parents are invited to submit any requests for 2011-12 School Council funds by printing off and completing a "Request for Funds" form available HERE or through the Council website. All forms are to be returned to the CVESC mailbox in the school office by October 5th, 2011.
The Ad Hoc Finance Committee meeting will be held on October 18th, 2011 at 7pm in the library. Come join us to review the Requests for Funds submitted to School Council for 2011-12, and to determine our fundraising goal for this school year! If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Hill.

NEW ENTRY PROCESS
| Parents have been asking about the different entry process this year. Hopefully below clarifies the new procedures!
The early bell, which allowed students to come into the school at 9:05am and be in the halls and classes until 9:15am last year, is no longer permitted as it contravenes the minutes of supervision as outlined in the teachers' Collective Agreement. This year the bell will ring at 9:15am; students will line up; teachers will greet the students and bring them into the school. Opening exercises and announcements will happen later - about 11:40am - just before the first Nutrition break.
When students get off the bus this year, they will make their way to their designated playground where they will have approximately 10 minutes (depending on when their bus arrives) outside with their friends. There will continue to be 4 bus duty teachers and 3 yard duty teachers (formerly hall duty teachers) supervising the kids outside.

BALANCED SCHOOL DAY
| The Balanced School Day is an alternative to the traditional day schedule of two 15 minute recesses and a one-hour lunch break. At Castor Valley, the Balanced School Day involves dividing the 300 minute instructional day into a 150-minute block, a 100 minute block and a 50 minute block of teaching/learning time, separated by two 45 minutes of nutrition breaks and physical activity (recess).
CVES' Balanced School Day Timetable
9:15am students enter building
9:15-11:45 150 minute learning block (independent snack allowed) 11:45-12:30 20 minute nutrition break followed by a 25 minute recess
12:30-2:10 100 minute learning block
2:10-2:55 20 minute nutrition break followed by a 25 minute recess
2:55-3:45 50 minute learning block
3:45pm students board buses

LUNCH MONITORS NEEDED!
| |
CVES has been funded by the board to have adult lunch monitors in our classrooms and on the yard for 3 hours a day. This works out to two adult lunch monitors per nutrition and recess break every day of the week. We are currently looking for 2 lunch monitors for each nutrition and recess break on Mondays and Thursdays and 1 additional lunch monitor for each of the nutrition and recess breaks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. These are paid positions and require an hour and a half commitment daily.
If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Gail in the Main Office (821-1272). She will be able to provide you with the documentation required by the board. Once an application is submitted to the board with the requisite documentation, each new lunch monitor will be given an Employee Identification Number (EIN), after which their service as a lunch monitor in the school can begin.

A short training session will be provided. If you are interested, please contact Heather Wyche or call 613-821-4518, and specify your availability (mornings or afternoons, which days of the week), and whether you are able to help with the English reading program or the French reading program.
