| Playground Improvement Project Update | | Thanks you to our Castor Valley community for supporting school Council's fundraising efforts for the Playground Improvement Project. Following the Christmas appeal to local businesses, the $80,000 mark was reached. In addition, on Tuesday, January 13th, both Tony Greco, CEO of Tony Greco Lean and Fit and Sean James, the owner of the Manotick Lean and Fit location, visited Castor Valley to present a cheque for $10,000 from the Foundation to Fight Obesity in Children. It is with the support of our generous parent community and corporate donations, especially that of Tony Greco, our $90,000 fundraising goal has been achieved and we hope to begin "breaking ground" at the end of June. This then means our children can be playing in two new play structures on the first day of school in Septmember 2011. |
| The "Noboby" Doll | |
The "Nobody" doll promotes and celebrates character education and is making its way into many CVES classrooms. Students will have the opportunity, if they wish, to choose a charity, a community-building project and/or a project that is near and dear to their hearts which helps people, animals or the envirmonment while demonstrating good character. Students will bring the doll home to add features to the doll such as clothing, or an artifact that reflects their"good deed". Students will return the "Nobody" doll to the class and make a brief presentation to their classmates explaining how they served the community. This program prepares students to be responsible, caring and contributing citizens. Over time, the "Nobody" doll will turn into "Somebody" who reflects good character with a strong moral compass.
A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteer sewers and stuffers: Alison Quesnel and her Mom, Myra Kelly, Wendy Spenst and her mother-in-law, Penny Spenst, Jen McDonald's mother-in-law, Helene McDonald, Andrea Taylor, a secret sewer and to other sewers who offered to help including Erzebeth Brooks and Luiza Blaser. Many thanks to Lauriel Wills and Rebecca Parke who coordinated this project and to Mme. Patterson for her tremendous support of this initiative. |
| Grade 8 Initiatives | |
Thank you to our teachers, staff and parents who have supported and encouraged our Grade 8 students to think locally and globablly and reach out to help others in need. The three initiatives that the Grades 8 students participated in include:
Mission Christmas Campaign The Mission is one of the many organizations in Ottawa that helps the less fortunate by providing shelter, food and clothing for some of Ottawa's homeless. A heart felt thank you from the Grade 8 students to the staff and students for their support and their generous giving spirit at a time when there is a great need for giving. Our donations made it possible for the homeless to receive needed non-perishable items, clothing, hygiene necessities and hope. Many thanks from Morgan, Ilish, Tamra and Holly: Grade 8 students.
Free the Children In the foyer of CVES, you many have noticed a big blue poster beside the library. This poster is for the Adopt a Village Alternative Income program through the Canadian charity Free the Children. This program helps low-income families in Sierra Leone, Africa by supplying them with alternative income resources eg. cows, pigs, goats or sewing machines. The overall goal for the program is to raise $5,000. So far, approximately $1400 has been raised from our Vow of Silence fundraiser held in November and our Christmas dance proceeds. The Grade 8 students hope to finish this fundraiser by the end of this year. Page, Emma and Lydia: Grade 8 students Pop Tab Collection In 2011 Castor Valley will continue to collect pop tabs to raise money for the Ontario March of Dimes Wheelchair Pop Tab Fund. To date Castor Valley has collected over 3 million tabs and hopes to have enough money (by receiving cash for the aluminum tabs at an Ottawa metal recycler) for a third wheelchair by he end of this year. Please keep bringing in your tabs; there is a collection can in each classroom for students. Congratulations to Mme.Cunning's class who, to date, have collected the most tabs. This is making a positive difference in the lives of people in need. Keep up the great work Castor Valley! Ria and Rebecca: Grade 8 students
