School Council Amendments

Kim Sheldrick tabled a motion to introduce a non-voting affiliate membership category for those parents who can not commit to being a Member at Large (which requires monthly meeting attendance) but wish to receive meeting agendas, minutes and generally be more connected and active within School Council.

classroomHeather Wilson tabled a motion to make the Parent Class Rep Coordinator a member with portfolio to strengthen this role on Council. Both motions will be voted on at the next School Council meeting along with the Council goals and proposed budget for the 2010-11 school year.

A motion was passed to extend the classroom resource fund again this year ($100 per teacher) to show Council's support for our amazing teaching team and to acknowledge the reality that teachers purchase resources for their classrooms which are not covered by the school budget.
Student Reading Support

Calling all parents interested in offering reading support to our students. Parents can volunteer in the Early Literacy Program for JK and SK students or in the Parent Supported Literacy Program for students in grades 1, 2 or 3.

Orientation and training session for volunteers will be conducted by our Learning Support Teacher, Deborah Davidson and is scheduled for later in the fall.

Canadian Parents for French

School Council is now an affiliate member of this organization, a national network of volunteers which values French as an integral part of Canada and which is dedicated to the promotion and creation of French-second-language learning opportunities for young Canadians.

Thanks to parent Laurie Rail who has offered to liaise on behalf of School Council with this organization and find out how CVES parents can access there services and programs.
OCDSB Arts Recognition Award

Congratulations to parents Tara Klager and Chantal LeBlanc who received the Arts Recognition Award for Community Volunteering in the Arts for 2009-2010 from the OCDSB's Advisory Committee on the Arts.

Heather Wilson nominated these two amazing parents for launching of the Castor Valley Arts Club last year which introduced Haida drawing, Photography and the Ukelele to various age groups during their recess break.

Their volunteer efforts were an excellent example of parents working together with educators and community members to help the Board achieve its vision of "meeting every learner's needs" and their passion for the arts has enriched all your students immeasurably.
School Recycling Program
The school's recycling program is now aligned with the City of Ottawa's Recycling Program so same items that you recycle at home in the blue and black boxes can now be recycled at school (including juice boxes).
Milk and Alternative Lunch Program
Thank you to Trudy Docksteader for offering to coordinate the alternative lunch program again this year and to Debra Dowling for offering to coordinate the milk program. Forms have been sent home already, and due this week.
