| Best Fun Night Ever! | |
Beautiful weather, great games ... old and new, and community support from the Greely Fire Fighters who manned the BBQ and brought their fire trucks to show the kids, Scotiabank - Osgoode branch who provided three enthusiastic, smiling volunteers and kicked in $1000 per volunteer and the Osgoode Youth Association who sent two of their youth leaders to run the teacher/student water relay.
Many thanks to our student, parent, teacher and staff volunteers who helped make the night a fantastic success! Special thanks to:
Lori Blinn, Lauriel Wills and their team of 'professional' gift basket makers Tara TenDen, Jennifer MacLaurin and Alison Kelly-Quesnel, and to Mrs. Plewes in the office who helped sell advance tickets, teacher Mrs. Dowdall who passed this fundraising idea onto School Council, our parent class reps who helped promote the idea and to you, our parents, who sent in amazing items with your kids for the themed gift baskets!
Thanks also to our food suppliers, Robinson's Independent Grocer, Produce Depot, the Hot Potato Lady, and Subway as well as W.O. Stinson and Son who provided the propane and fuel inspection.
Thanks also to Luc Laporte who provided the ever popular popcorn for the event and to our bake sale coordinators Karen Warren, Rhonda Roberts and Marca McManus and their team of bakers.
Finally thanks to the Fun Night organizers Marg Clunie, Laurel Perry-Hapli, Trudy Docksteader, Tania Salvi, Luisa Kuca, Lisa Eggers, Penny Peters, Susanna Penning and Heather Wilson who are still recovering but thrilled that the evening went smoothly and was a financial success with $8506.06 rom the event including the $3000 donation from Scotiabank.
We are off to a great start with our fundraising campaign for our primary play structure replacement project! |
| School Supply Kits | |
School supply kits for grades 1 to 8 students will be offered for sale for the second year but this time through Best Tools for Schools as our previous supplier, School Ready Supplies has amalgamated with them.
Please note that $4 from every kit sold will come back to School Council.
Kits will be dropped off the week before school starts and you will be notified via email when your kit is ready for you to pick-up in the school foyer. All kits must be picked up and taken home so your child's school supplies can be labeled and brought back on the first day of school.
School supply lists for grades 1 to 8 are also available on the school council website www.castorvalley.ca for those who wish to purchase their own supplies. |
| School Council |
Thank you to our Castor Valley community for a wonderful year!
Special thanks to our parent volunteers who assisted in various ways throughout the school year and to our CVES teachers, staff and admin for working collaboratively with the parent community.
Special thanks to Francine Hopley, Christine Mercier and Emese Geoffrion for their years of service on School Council. The efforts of these three hard working ladies are behind the school council website and Annual Used Book Sale (Francine), Christmas shopping day and various other fundraising events (Christine) and the playground improvement project (Emese). We wish the entire Castor Valley community a safe, healthy and fun summer break!
Elections for the 2010/11 School Council will be held at the first School Council meeting on Thursday, September 9 @ 7 pm in the library.
Please print the School Council Self-Nomination Form available on our website www.castorvalley.ca and drop it off in the school office.
Come and join this great group of people who volunteer their time and talents to enhance student achievement and to create a positive learning environment for all.

| www.castorvalley.ca | Three new features have been added to our School Council website. The first is a Wish List tab http://www.castorvalley.ca/wishlist.php where we list items we are looking for that you may have in your possession but no longer need and would be willing to donate to the school. The first item on our list is a sturdy wooden picnic table for our primary play ground. If you have one and can donate it to the school, please contact Natasha Robb-Burrows at tioman_1998@yahoo.com.
The second is a Volunteers tab where we have posted information related to signing up to be a Parent Class Rep for next year http://www.castorvalley.ca/volunteers.php . If you are interested in becoming a parent class rep next year for your child's class, please contact our Parent Class Rep coordinator Jen Danby-McDonald at jdanbymcdonald@hotmail.com .
The third is the Resources for Parents virtual bookshelf in the top right hand corner of the website where information from our Castor Connections parent information evenings is posted along with a wonderful collection of useful French websites and resources for FSL learners. |
| Lost and Found | | Items are now on display in the primary hallway until Monday, June 28 when they will be sorted, laundered and taken to a consignment store or donated. |
| Mabel's Labels | Please consider labeling your child's items with Mabels Labels, one of our school fundraisers - Mabel's Labels are fun, durable labels for the stuff kids lose...hats, mittens, coats, boots, shoes, bags, to name a few. Sticky and clothing labels are dishwasher, microwave and laundry safe. Labels are designed to be very special to each child, customized with your child's name, favourite mix of colours and an icon, and are perfect for school, day care, camp and sports teams. Order here and support CVES at the same time! |
| Pop Tabs | | Thank you for all your support for our school-wide wheel chair pop tab collection project.
We cashed in the 1.5 million pop tabs collected by CVES and received $612.25 at a metal recycler. Thanks to Jordan P. and Morgan P. grade 7 students, who donated some of their birthday money, we were able to achieve the $700 needed to make a wheelchair which was presented to March of Dimes at our year-end assembly.

| Campbell's Labels for Education | |
Please keep collecting Campbell's soup labels (including the bar codes) over the summer.
Each label is worth one point and we will soon be 'purchasing' some items for a less fortunate school.
As the school will be closed for the summer, the bin will be inaccessible but please, hold onto them until September when the school reopens.
Product labels that can be used include Campbell's condensed soups, Prego products, Chunky Soup, Goldfish crackers, Campbell's broths, Ramen hearty Noodles, Healthy Request Soups, V8 products, Pace Salsa, Habitant Soups, Gardennay, Soup at Hand, Easy Cooking Sauces and Creations Soups.
If you happen to accumulate too many to store, please contact Kim at kimsheldrick@yahoo.ca or 613-821-3033 to arrange for delivery/pickup. |
| Rideauwood Funding Update |
Thanks to the financial support of local community organizations, CVESC and Metcalfe Public School Council, Rideauwood Addiction and Family Services will continue to provide drug and alcohol addiction prevention, education and counseling for grade 6, 7 & 8 students at our two schools.
Funds raised to date for next year's programming stand at $3700 including $1000 from CVESC, $1000 from MPSC, $1000 from Shroomfest, $500 from the Metcalfe and District Lions and $200 from the Vernon Women's Institute.. |
| Gr. 7 & 8 Stock Market Challenge |
Thank you again to our sponsors David Avon, BMO Nesbitt Burns, Jim Carroll, BMO Harris Private Banking and the Royal Bank, St. Laurent Branch who provided $800 to offset the $2800 cost School Council covered to run this event.
Thanks also to our parent volunteers Lisa Coppens, Nicole MacLaurin, Trudy Docksteader, Donna Gledhill, Tammy Green and Brenda Trask and to our intermediate teachers.
What a fantastic learning opportunity for our grade 7 & 8 students! |
| Summer Reading |
Looking for summer reading suggestions, visit http://www.scholastic.ca/summer/ and check out the age appropriate summer book lists near the bottom of the page. Most of these titles can be purchased at retail bookstores or borrowed through the Ottawa Public Library.

| Meet the Teacher |
Meet the Teacher is scheduled for an evening in September. Look for more information to come home the first week of school. |
| Playground Improvement Project |
Look for the Entertainment Book as the back to school fundraiser in September for the Playground Improvement Project. We hope our Castor Valley community will find this a practical fundraiser that pays for itself by using the book only twice while helping our school raise much needed funds to enhance our playground for our 700 students. |
