Attending Support Groups at Independence House
Support groups offer individuals an opportunity to connect with other people experiencing similar challenges. Independence House offers a variety of group opportunities for adults, teens and children. Each support group is structured around multiple group goals depending on age of participants and group purpose. Some groups invite members to share stories, while others focus on skill-building and self-awareness.
Independence House offers many support groups in addition to free confidential counseling services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and children who witness violence. Through Independence House's Community Based Services (CBS) program, a seeking safety group, a domestic violence support group and a substance abuse relapse prevention group all meet weekly. Additionally, Independence House offers a support group at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility weekly with focuses on substance abuse/domestic violence, as well as boundaries and self esteem..
Through the Independence House Child Witness to Violence (CWV) and Child-Teen programs, children's empowerment and self esteem group sessions are held weekly at Safe Harbor's shelter for 6-8 and 10-13 year olds.
Appointments for confidential counseling and groups can be discussed by calling Liz (adult sessions); Jeanne or Jennifer (for child or teen sessions) at 508-771-6507.

The Nicholas Xiarhos Respectful Youth Relationship Program launches with a special event in April Independence House is proud to announce the launch of a new youth-focused educational program promoting healthy relationships and violence prevention among high school students throughout Cape Cod. The program, named for Nicholas Xiarhos, son of Yarmouth Police Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos, and whose life was lost while serving our country overseas in Afghanistan, will operate under the umbrella of the Education and Prevention Program of Independence House.
The Nicholas Xiarhos Respectful Youth Relationship Program is supported in part by a grant from the Verizon Foundation's Domestic Violence Solutions Grant Program, the Nicholas Xiarhos Foundation, a grant from the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office and the generous contribution of an Independence House Board member.
The new program will launch its inaugural event on April 25th at the Barnstable High School (BHS) Knights Hall by recognizing the accomplishments of the BHS Mentors in Violence Prevention(MVP) Program. The MVP program, presented to students by Independence House provides training through a structured curriculum on raising awareness and inspiring leadership around preventing violence, teen dating violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment and gender stereotypes. Students work independently throughout the school year on projects that empower them and raise awareness among their peers on these topics. The event, named 'Connect for Respect" by the MVP students will highlight their projects.
The general public is encouraged to attend this event, and Cape-wide students who attend will have the opportunity to win an iPad in a give-away. BHS students will also have a chance at winning an iPad through a contest to create a logo for the BHS MVP Program. Special guest performers, Project Moves Dance Company of The Gold School, a nationally acclaimed dance troupe made up of youth will perform a multi-media show with a theme of anti-bullying, acceptance, peer and social issues.
Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students. Available at the Independence House office (508-771-6507) and through Barnstable High School (Mrs Fay, teacher).
