Greetings!

Domestic abuse is not always physical violence.

Domestic violence includes emotional, psychological, sexual, financial and mental abuse. Emotional and financial abuse are discussed in this article.

Emotional abuse humiliates and attacks the victims self-worth and sense of independence. Emotional abuse includes threats to the victim which are intended  to scare the victim and serve as a deterrent to positive action.

Financial abuse prohibits and limits access to resources including financial and basic necessities, sabotaging the victim's job, preventing the victim from work.

Abusive behavior is a deliberate choice made by the abuser in order to control the person who is the victim.  Abusers are very good at denial, blame and making excuses.  If caught or exposed, they may blame their abusive or violent behavior on a bad childhood or a bad day, and very often point the blame directly to the victim of their own abuse in an attempt to deflect the blame of the behavior from themselves.

In addition to the above, any of these signs indicate that you may be in an abusive relationship.  Does your partner:

  • have a bad and unpredictable temper?
  • hurt you, or threaten to hurt or kill you?
  • threaten to take your children away or harm them?
  • threaten to commit suicide if you leave?
  • force you to have sex?
  • destroy your belongings?
  • humiliate or yell at you?
  • criticize you and put you down?
  • treat you so badly that you're embarrassed for your friends or family to see?
  • ignore or put down your opinions or accomplishments?
  • blame you for his own abusive behavior?
  • see you as property or a sex object, rather than as a person?
  • act excessively jealous and possessive?
  • control where you go or what you do?
  • keep you from seeing your friends or family?
  • limit your access to money, the phone, or the car?
  • constantly check up on you?

An empowered life can begin here!

What is Elder Abuse?

Each year hundreds of thousands of older persons are abused, neglected, and exploited. Many victims are people who are older, frail, and vulnerable and cannot help themselves and depend on others to meet their most basic needs. Abusers of older adults are both women and men, and may be family members, friends, or "trusted others."

In general, elder abuse is a term referring to any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult. Legislatures in all 50 states have passed some form of elder abuse prevention laws.
