| Greetings! | |
As participants registered and took in a light breakfast you could feel the positive energy flowing at the Annual Domestic Violence Awareness 5K Walk/Run, Saturday,October 16. Entertainment was in the air, playing a variety of music from the 60's and 70's as over 100 participants, volunteers and staff returned from the walk carrying purple balloons to honor the victims and celebrate the survivors of domestic violence. The event raised over $8,000 and to say this was a success is an understatement. The importance of the 5K walk/run was more than just a fundraiser. Raising awareness of domestic violence, engaging the community to stand up against violence and getting involved is key to the success of Independence House's mission which was well received from throughout the community.
Independence House gratefully extends thank you's to everyone that walked, ran, donated, pledged, volunteered and supported this mission. And special thanks to all of our contributing sponsors including Willy's Gym, Boston Medical Center Healthnet Plan, The Women's Workout Company, Trader Joe's, Lamberts Rainbow Fruit Market, Friends Market and Poland Springs. |

SAN FRANCISCO - Child maltreatment in the U.S. can be driectly linked to unemployment rates, researchers reported here.
Each 1% increase in the unemployment rate was associated with at least 0.50 per 1,000 more cases of confirmed child maltreatment one year later, Robert Sege, MD, PhD, of Boston University, and colleagues found in a national study of state-level data. Read full story
