| Greetings! |
Each day at Independence House, we have the privelage of working with victims of domestic and sexualized violence to make a positive difference in their lives. At Independence House we ask survivors/victims to tell us if coming to our agency and interacting with our staff makes any meaningful difference in their lives. Here is a snapshot of what we hear over and over again.
1. What services did you participate in at Independence House? "One on One counseling", "group counseling" for self esteem and "advocacy for help with other problems".
2. What was your goal in coming to Independence House? " To find out why I was staying in an abusive relationship".
3. Did we help you reach your goals? "Yes, I was pretty much broken when I came in and it helped to put the pieces back together."
4. Are you satisfied with the services you received? "Yes, most definitely".
5. How satisisfied are you with our: Very Satisfied Satisfied Dissatisfied Staff X Facilities X 6. What other services/programs should we offer? "Lawyers to represent Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault victims".
7. What suggestions do you have for improvements? "None". Although we envision a day when our services are no longer necessary, it is our commitment to continue to work with victims/survivors in ways which enable to claim and reclaim their own power over the effects of domestic and sexualized violence. | Education briefs at Independence House |
In an ongoing effort to provide specialized services to the community, Independence House includes an education and outreach program designed specifically for the youth in our community. Here are some upcoming highlights:
- During the first week of May, Independence House will be visiting the Cape Cod Tech School in Harwich for a number of sessions throughout the week including topics on appropriate and healthy communication, gender issues and sexual harrassment.
- May 21 is the last 'Youth at the Mall' night during this school year. Independence House volunteers will have a table with material on such topics as teen dating violence and parents talking to kids about healthy relationships.
- In light of the recent anti-bullying bill passed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Bournedale Elementary, Peebles Elementary in Bourne and Harwich Middle School will be visited by Independence House for a series of short workshops on conventional and cyber bullying. The focus is to empower students with bystander intervention skills.
- Independence House has also been invited by the Outer Cape Health Nework at a closed event on May 6 for a presentation on the programs and services that Independence House provides.
