From Our Principal...
| |
February is going to be a busy month! First, we are anticipating that sometime in February the Home Access Center will open up for elementary parents. This is the online system that will give parents access to some of their child's school information. More information will be sent out regarding how you get your password and access the Home Access Center. With the implementation of new technology often comes kinks to work out and we appreciate your patience as we work through them. This will be a learning curve and process for all of us. Again, be on the look out for more information to be sent home regarding the launch of the Home Access Center.
We are very excited to announce that the date of our Big Dig for Field's garden will be February, 25 from 9am to 3pm. The plans are amazing and the possibilities are endless. On the 25th, we will need many volunteers to come and help build our garden. If you have access to digging equipment please let Debbie Fisher know. As the date approaches, please be looking for additional information on donations needed and how you can get involved. You don't have to know anything about gardening or how to construct a garden. We will have experts here guiding and directing us. We anticipate our garden being a great learning experience for our students, staff, and community.
Believe it or not... it is time to start thinking about next fall. Please note the calendar for next year has been moved up and the first day of school will be August 15th. If you know of anyone who will have a kindergarten student at Field next year, please let them know that Kindergarten Registration for the 2012-2013 school year will be held at Field on March 14th at 1:30pm. We appreciate your help in getting the word out to our families who don't already have students here at Field.
Thank you for all your support of Field Students!
Dr. Bagwell, Principal Eugene Field Elementary

From Our PTA President...
| |
Dear friends and families of Field,
Well, January flew by! As we head into February, the PTA is looking for some help in a few areas this year.
We need someone (or a couple of folks) to help manage the Spring Dance scheduled for May 11. The PTA has a tentative plan, but we need a coordinator for the Dance to help put it together.
Next we need someone to take on the task of running our twice yearly book fair for the 2012-2013 school year. Becky Fraley has been running it for years, but this is her last. If you are interested, the Spring book fair begins on May 15th. This would be a great time to let Becky show you the ropes. I wish to give a public thanks to Becky for running the book fair for all these year.
Finally, if you have any fundraising ideas for next year or would like to coordinate an event, please contact me or Sonja Shaw, VP of Development, sonjashaw@gmail.com.
Thanks to you for making Field a great school!
Bill Enos

The next volunteer facilitated book discussions will be held on Wednesday, February 22, during students' lunch times.
On Wednesday, March 14, we will have a pizza party to celebrate the kids' hard work!

THE BIG DIG - Feb. 25, 9am to 3pm
|
Dear Field Families,
The time has arrived! Plans are complete and we have a date for constructing the Field School Garden. Field School in coalition with Springfield Urban Agricultural Coalition was awarded a grant to build a school garden complete with a large High Tunnel . The High Tunnel will allow students to be in the garden 12 months out of the year. ALL GRADE LEVELS will be eligible to learn in the school garden and will have various projects tied to the units of inquiry that they are studying.Instructors from the project will schedule and teach lesson on a weekly basis. We even have a chef coming to cook with students once we begin harvesting!
We need your help to make this incredible opportunity happen. Please bring your garden gloves, rakes, shovels, hoes, hammers, and any tools that might be useful to help construct the raised garden beds and build the high tunnel. NO GARDENING EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! There are many ways that you can help support so please join this effort. We will need people to build, dig, make sure everyone is hydrated, provide refreshments and serve lunch to workers, get supplies to workers, etc. We will begin at 9am and work until 3pm. This is a family event and for all grade levels and we want participation by all! The only requirement for children is that they be supervised by their own parents.
What a great experience for them to work along side of mom and/or dad! So come and join in the learning experience for you and your child!! This is an ambitious undertaking and our hope is that we have at least 100 workers!!!
Questions or want to help? Please contact Mrs. Fisher, dfisher@spsmail.org.

If you would like your child to visit Glendale High School as part of its Future Falcons program, please contact JJ Dixon at the Field front office, 523-4800. The next visit will be held in February.
Parents and children enjoy touring the school together while meeting with both students and faculty. Please note: Your child will not be recorded as "absent" from school during his/her Glendale tour.

From SPS, SCPTA and/or Foundation for Springfield Public Schools
| |
Springfield Public Schools is currently experiencing problems with its e-mail system. We have recently received several phishing e-mails, resulting in the SPS e-mail account being blocked by large e-mail providers such as SBCGLOBAL and Hotmail, among others. We have requested that these e-mail providers remove SPS from their blocked lists and they have done so. However, as these phishing e-mails continue to cycle through our e-mail system we may be repeatedly blocked as it runs its course. Unfortunately this is disrupting e-mail communication between parents and SPS teachers. Please understand that SPS has not blocked parents' e-mail addresses. Instead, SPS e-mails have been blocked by parents' e-mail providers. We will continue to monitor this issue. Meantime, please remember that SPS will never ask for your user name or password via e-mail.

The "Ultimate Bake Sale" began on December 1 and will continue until the end of the school year. There is no limit to the number of pizza's you can order! We'll keep you posted on the progress as you help us raise money to support the students and staff of our schools.

Volunteer at Field Elementary - Policies and Information
|
Our volunteer program consists of community members, parents, grandparents, local businesses and organizations who acknowledge the importance between community involvement and education. Our volunteers work in a variety of capacities, both inside and
outside the classroom from mentoring or tutoring a child to assisting in a school's office or cafeteria.
In order to become a registered volunteer, and keep your volunteer status current, volunteers must complete and return a Volunteer Registration/Background Check Form. This form may be obtained by clicking the SPS link below, in the Community Relations Office, or in the main office of our schools. Anyone volunteering directly with children at our school must perform the registration and background check. The background check costs $17.50; please make checks out to Springfield Public Schools. If you already have a background check completed due to your work or community board service, please provide the school secretary with a copy.
