From Our Principal...

In this time of Thanksgiving, I find myself thankful for many things at Field. Some of which include:

Teachers who pour themselves into their students

Happy students who are engaged in their learning

Action taking students

New, friendly faces helping with our transition

Knowledgeable secretary who helps everyone out

Support staff that is always ready to lend a helping hand

Generous community looking to meet our students' needs

Involved parents who invest in their child's

school and education

Volunteers who give selflessly of their time

Internationally minded students thinking beyond themselves

New garden to be built soon

Growing school community looking towards

the Positive Possibilities

I'm also thankful we are one of very few districts across the country to offer the full K-12 continuum of IB programs. This month Principal's Coffee (November 18th at 9:15am) will focus on the Middle Years Program (MYP). We will host some representatives from Pipkin Middle School to tell us more about the MYP and answer our questions. This opportunity is not just for 5th grade parents. I encourage anyone interested in having their child continue in the IB program after they graduate from Field to attend.

Have a great month and I hope to see you around during Parent/Teacher Conference Week or Principal's Coffee!

Dr. Bagwell, Principal

Eugene Field Elementary

From Our PTA President...

Dear Field Community,

Can you believe the semester is past the halfway point?  WOW!  Thanks to everyone for all the support you've shown to the teachers and staff at the school.  Field has an incredible history of family involvement and that history continues.

Over 70 dads, moms, and children showed up for the Watch D.O.G.S. presentation on Oct. 11. This was chaired by John Riddle and J.T. Tetlow and supported by McSalty's Pizza.  The event had phenomenal attendance and displayed great commitment to your children's school.

I spoke with one father who wanted to be more involved but didn't know how. He is able to do something one afternoon a week. I suggested going to his child's Kindergarten class to read to the class. The kids, teacher and parent find this fulfilling.

The participation in the Open House was amazing.  As a parent, it thrills me to see all the students and parents in the school.

At least 10 parents showed up last month to help the 4th grade class with their water experiments.Everyday, parents have lunch with their children while other parents are in the lunchroom assisting in keeping order and helping children. Any involvement in the school is fantastic and when our children see us involved in their school, it increases the importance they put on education.

Please consider supporting our school by becoming a registered PTA member. CLICK HERE NOW to download the membership form.

Fall Fundraising Campaign ends Nov. 7

The mission of Missouri PTA is to be:
A powerful voice for all children
A relevant resource for all families and communities, and
A strong advocate for the education and well-being of every child

Field PTA does this by supporting numerous programs that otherwise would not occur.  Funds are used to support field trips, the Discovery Center, special funding for our teachers, and several other programs.

Goal:  In order to support these programs, we need to net $7,000.
If each student sold 2 books or each family donated $50 per student, we will meet our goal!  However, any donation above or below this suggested amount is greatly appreciated!

This year you have 2 opportunities to help us reach our goal:

1. Write a Check
Simply make your check payable to Field PTA and 100% of your donation goes to the general fundraising account.

2.  Sell Entertainment Books - $30 eachEntertainment logo
These coupon books were sent home with kids on Monday, October 24.  The books are filled with hundreds of money saving coupons.  Each book is priced at $30. If we sell 100+ books, we earn $15 for each book; a profit of 50%.   Entertainment books

If you would like to purchase the book, simply return payment of $30. If you choose not to buy the book, please return the book to your student's classroom.

If you would like to purchase additional books, please submit the proper amount and pick-up the additional book from your student's classroom.

Each classroom will have an envelope for collecting funds and a box for collecting unsold books.
Prizes will be awarded for both options. Please make checks payable to Field PTA.

Please send any donations and any unsold books to your student's classroom
by Nov. 7.

Parent Inquiry Group - Join us!

Are you interested in learning with other parents about how children acquire a second language? Do you wonder what we might do as a school to incorporate Spanish outside of Spanish class? These are just a few of the questions we are wondering as we determine what we might do to assimilate Spanish into our school culture. Staff will be exploring this issue throughout the year and we would love to have a parent group inquiring with us. If you would like to be involved in a parent study group you are welcome to join us on November 17 from 4-5pm in the library. At this time will discuss when we would like to meet, brainstorm the questions we have about language acquisition, and determine possible resources we can pull from. If you have further questions or if you would like to be involved but unable to attend the meeting please contact Dr. Bagwell at jbagwell@spsmail.org.

Days of Sharing 2011, Week One, Nov. 14 - 18
Nov. 14-18, kicks off  Days of Sharing at Field!
Click here now to sign-up to help with DOS Week One's carline collection!

Hello Field families!  It is the time of year where Field students and families have a chance to give back to our community through Days of Sharing!  We will adopt families in the Springfield area who need assistance this holiday season.  Please consider participating in as many, or as few, Days of Sharing activities as your family is comfortable doing. I realize this is a very busy time of year, with many demands of both time and money. Please know that ALL donations and efforts are greatly appreciated!

Volunteers will be in the car line during the weeks of November 14-18 and December 5-9 to accept donations.
We will also have collection areas just inside the front doors where donations may be placed anytime.  Just watch for the Days of Sharing signs!

Days of Sharing List - November 14-18
Please consider bringing a donation on one or more of these days!

Monday, November 14
Socks and Underwear - elementary sizes appreciated

Tuesday, November 15
Personal Hygiene Items - toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner

Wednesday, November 16
Dollar Day - Please consider donating $1 to be used by Days of Sharing to purchase household needs and gifts for our adopted families!

Thursday, November 17
Cleaning Supplies - laundry detergent, Lysol/Clorox wipes, household cleaning supplies

Friday, November 18
Paper products - toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex

Monetary or Gift Card Donations
If you do not have time to shop, we would gratefully receive money or gift cards to be used to purchase household items and gifts for our adopted families.  I realize it can be overwhelming to participate in the daily activities, and if so, a one-time donation may be a good fit for your family.  We can use Wal-Mart, Target and any shoe store gift cards.  Any checks should be made to Field PTA; please note Days of Sharing in your memo line.  These donations can be accepted in the car line or left in the office.  All donations are very appreciated.

Wishing Stars: Wishing Stars can be found in the entry of the school! Star
These stars list some of the items needed for Days of Sharing, and all cost $10 or less. If you would like to purchase one of the items on the stars, simply take that star with you to use as a reminder when you shop. The stars will be up during the entire Days of Sharing season and can be donated at anytime! Put the item in the Wishing Stars basket (front of school) at your convenience!

Holiday Gifts for Adopted Families
Through the Days of Sharing program, we provide adopted families with household needs and holiday gifts.  A complete list of needed items and gift suggestions will go out in Monday folders prior to Thanksgiving, allowing those who wish to shop early a chance to do so.  We will collect these items the week of December 5-9. However, if you shop early and want to drop off your donations earlier, just let me know!

Food Drive
On Saturday, December 10, the Cub Scouts from Field Elementary's Pack 214 will conduct a neighborhood food drive in the Field district.  The food collected will benefit our adopted families, PTA's Backpack Program, and Ozarks Food Harvest.  If a collection bag shows up on your doorstep, please consider donating!  The Pack will spend two Saturday mornings working on behalf of Days of Sharing - dropping off grocery bags one Saturday morning and then picking up the filled bags the following week. Thank you to our Cub Scouts, their leaders, and parents for providing such a generous service to our community!

Also...
Field Teachers' Wish Lists
This is a great way for you and your children to let teachers and staff members know you appreciate all they do for your children every day! Wish lists list will go out in Monday folders the week of Thanksgiving.

As you can see, there are many ways to be involved in Days of Sharing at Field Elementary!  Please consider if you can participate in one or more areas.  Thank you in advance for your participation!  Field families have a long-standing tradition of giving back to their school and community, and I know 2011 will be no exception!

Please call or e-mail if you have any questions.

Field Green Team Update and Save the Date!

It's time! We are finally ready to form the Field Core Garden Team!  Field Elementary School has received a grant to be part of the Springfield Urban Agriculture Coalition program to provide a schoolyard community based garden.

We need parents to be part of this remarkable opportunity for our students. Plans include DIRT Projectconstruction of a high tunnel greenhouse, terraced gardens, a shed, garden supplies, outdoor classroom area, prep station for harvested crops, and so much more. This will take a lot of volunteers and WE NEED YOU on our committee. Don't feel that you need to have a green thumb or even know anything about gardening or constructing a garden. We will all learn together.

Our funding begins in November and we have scheduled a tentative work day to build and construct the garden on Saturday, Dec 3. This will be an all-school event and we will need lots of volunteers  to help with the build. There will be many ways to help and we want our students to be involved too!

If you are interested in becoming part of the Green Team, please email Debbie Fisher at dfisher@spsmail.org.

Fun Night a Great Success!

Fun NightThanks to everyone who helped make Fun Night a great success! Thanks especially to the Fun Night chairs, Curtis and Amanda Cunningham, for all of their hard work and enthusiasm!

The results of the contests are as follows:
Pumpkin Silent Auction - Ms. Goings' 3rd grade class
Pie Contest - Dr. Bagwell
Chili Contest - Ty Morgan

The event raised $150 for the PTA Clothing Bank.  Thanks to the Care to Learn matching grant, our contribution will be doubled, making it $300!  The evening also raised just over $1,600 toward the PTA's general fund, which helps make possible all of our great PTA programs!

Important Transfer Information

5th Grade or 8th Grade Parents-If you desire for your child to attend a middle or high school OTHER than the school that serves your address, a transfer request form must be completed.  Transfers are approved based on building capacity and the order in which the transfers are received. The transfer forms may be picked up in the principal's office.  The transfer form needs to be completed and sent to the principal of the school the child is requesting to attend. It is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian to send the transfer form to the requested school. 5th to 6th Grade and 8th to 9th Grade Transfer requests must be submitted to the principal of the school to which you wish to transfer no later than 3pm on Friday December 2, 2011.

PTA Parent Resource

The Parents' Guides help parents understand what the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics will include as they are implemented in schools over the next 1-3 years. They are divided by grade levels so they are easy to understand.

To download the Parents' Guides, please visit: http://www.pta.org/4446.htm.

4th and 5th Grade Knitting Club

Would you like to learn how to knit? Are you already a knitter and like to help teach others? Are you somewhere in between and want to get better? This club is for you!

Who? All Field 4th and 5th graders are invited to join
the Field Knitters.
What? Field Knitting Club
When? Tuesday afternoons starting November 8 and ending December 13. We will start after school and students need to
be picked up at 5:00.
Where? Field Library

What do I need to bring? - All participants need to bring one set of knitting needles . Medium size would be best to start with (somewhere between an 8-13), but if you have a different size bring them and we will help you. Everyone needs to bring a smooth yarn to learn on (we can get to fun yarns later after you learn the basics). Red Heart or Caron would be good inexpensive yarns for purposes of learning. These items can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or Jo-Anns, but if you need assistance please let us know! There are some wonderful yarn shops in our community and beautiful yarns at the stores listed... we would suggest waiting until skills are built before purchasing expensive yarns. Once you learn the basics the world of fun yarns will be an open pallet for you!!

What about snacks? - In efforts to keep the cost down, snacks will not be provided. If you would like an after school snack, please feel free to bring one for yourself!

I'm a parent and want to learn too, can I come? - YES! We would love to have students and their parents learning together. Students in K-2 may attend if their parent is participating.

All students participating must return the following permission slip in order to participate in the club.
Please click here now to download the permission slip.

Staff of the Month

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Debbie Bradley our

Her students certainly benefit from her commitment to her profession and desire for their success.

Thank you Mrs. Bradley for making Field Elementary a wonderful place to learn and work!

Thank you to all the Field families who donated books during my book drive for Ronald McDonald House this month!  Field families really showed a lot of support for my action plan, bringing in 772 books!  There were so many books that Ronald McDonald House did not have room for them all, so we took the remainder to Isabel's House!  Both places asked how we got so many books, and it was a great opportunity to explain about our PYP school and action plans.  - submitted by Jacob,
