From Our Principal...
|
This year we have teamed up with Dominos to provide a pizza night on the second Tuesday of each month. We will receive $1 from each pizza sold for Field. Our plan is for the money to go towards technology needs in our classrooms. This month, Mrs. Aho's 4th grade students won the class party! Please consider helping us raise some funds for technology by participating in Dominos pizza night.
On October 24, we will hold our first Site Council meeting for the year. This is a group of teachers, parents, and students who are working together on school improvement efforts. If you would like to be a part, please join us in the library at 4pm. Students are welcome to attend and participate with their parent.
I hope to see you at Open House on October 4!
With the Children in Mind,
Dr. Bagwell, Principal
Eugene Field Elementary

From Our PTA President...
|
WOW! I just finished looking at the list of volunteers who are looking to help the school and am amazed! Dozens (I think I counted 103) of you signed up to volunteer to help make Field Elementary a better school and positively impact the lives of children. If you signed up and haven't received an email or phone call, don't worry. You'll be contacted. But, if you can't wait or worry that your name might have slipped through the cracks, you can email me at enos0726@gmail.com or call 225-2562. Some immediate needs are Membership Chair (for this year and maybe next year), and Book Fair Chair for the next school year (this upcoming book fair you could be trained by our Super Book Fair Expert, Becky Fraley). You can dip your toes into the volunteer pool or dive right in. There truly is a place for everyone in PTA. We will need help in October at our Book Fair/Open House and Fun Night (our fall festival), among other events. If you have a passion in a particular area, we may be able to connect you with that service. Ann Howard does wonders for the PTA Clothing Bank, which this year provided clothes to over 300 students. Anna Gintz and Molly Robb head up the backpack program which provides weekend meals to several of our students. The school has programs which utilize volunteers to tutor, mentor, or read to children. If you're more ambitious, in February we begin nominating for our Executive Committee (president, president-elect, three vice-presidents, secretary, treasurer and parliamentarian). Even if you do not think you will have much time to actively volunteer this year, please consider supporting our school by becoming a registered PTA member. CLICK HERE NOW to download the membership form. I hope your school year has gotten off to as good a start as mine and keeps flying along! |

PTA Clothing Bank - Care to Learn Matching Grant
|
Thanks to all who helped work our school's shift at the PTA Clothing Bank on Wednesday, Sept. 14 and to those many families who have donated new and gently used clothing.
Clothing donations are always welcome! There is a collection bin in the corner as you go around to the school office; it is labeled "Clothing Bank Donations". We are especially in need of new packages of no show socks and boxers/bikini underwear for all school age sizes. Cash donations are always welcome, too! The Care to Learn Fund has pledged again this year to provide $10,000 in matching funds for Clothing Bank cash contributions. At Fun Night (fall festival,) keep an eye out for a special "Stuff the Scarecrow" fundraising effort. This fundraiser will help us take full advantage of this wonderful gift matching opportunity!
If you are able to help with the PTA Clothing Bank, please contact Ann Howard at bah2004@live.com.

The goal is to have these men spend at least one day a year at the school and be an extra set of eyes and ears as positive male role model.
In order to come you need to fill out an RSVP form and return it to the school by Oct. 10.

5th Grade Fundraising
|
Hi everyone! This is just a little note to let you know what is up with 5th grade fundraising efforts at Field Elementary. Some of you may have noticed that we have already held one fundraiser at McSalty's specifically for Field's 5th grade class. For those of you who have not yet had a 5th grader, in a few years you, too, will reach that milestone where some special events take place that need some extra financial support. While other grades do not host individual grade level fundraisers, the 5th grade class is an exception as it must raise its own money for some very special events.
A Field fifth grade year is filled with some unique traditions at Field, some of which include: 1) Graduation (which includesa graduation ceremony, a graduation program, a graduation slide show and DVD, a graduation reception complete with food and beverages) and a graduation breakfast (which may require bus transportation) 2) A special end of the year Field Day event (most recently this is a separate Field Day for 5th grade with hotdogs, chips and soda, and sometimes includes a water sprayer machine and/or dunk tank) 3) 5th grade T-shirts (designed by a student that has been chosen in a contest at the beginning of the year) to be worn on Field trips and for 5th grade events - these are provided at no cost to every 5th grader 4) An end of the year and much anticipated "Silver Dollar City Field Trip" (which requires three bus rentals) 5) A legacy gift to Field
These event costs add up quickly and require quite a good bit of money (historically around $3,000) so throughout the year you will see the 5th graders working hard to raise funds to meet these goals. There will be the Spirit Days (Hat Day, Crazy Hair Day, Team Sport Day, PJ Day and other such days where we ask that everyone participating pay $1), a bake sale during the winter holiday program, and we will be planning other such events throughout the year until we raise enough funds.
Thank you in advance for your support and understanding in our endeavors,
The 5th Grade Students, 5th Grade Teachers, and 5th Grade Liaisons

Staff of the Month
|
Congratulations to LouAnn Kennedy and Tori Zettl our October Staff of the Month!
Ms. Kennedy teaches our K/1 split class. She was nominated by a parent who indicated her student's current success in school is attributed to the solid foundation Ms. Kennedy provided for them in kindergarten. Ms. Kennedy gave him encouragement and developed her students' confidence as learners.
Ms. Zettl is our counselor here at Field. She was nominated by a parent who described her as supportive and hands-on. They also expressed appreciation for how Ms. Zettl's support goes beyond their needs at school.
Thank you Ms. Kennedy and Ms. Zettl for making Field Elementary a wonderful place to learn and work!
Has there been a Field teacher or staff member that has been special to your family or student? Parents and students can nominate any staff member for Staff of the Month. Nominating is easy. Just drop a note off at the office or email Dr. Bagwell at jbagwell@spsmail.org.

Support Field's Backpack Program
|
Each week during the school year, many of our students are supplied with backpacks filled with nutritious food to take home over the weekend. As the economy has been weakened, the need has become greater. The committee often purchases food in bulk for this program to stretch PTA dollars further.
Wish List item donations are always welcome, but the Backpack Committee also welcomes cash contributions designated to this program. There is a collection jar at the front office window for this purpose.
If you are able to contribute Wish List items, please place them in the blue collection bin in front of the office. CLICK HERE NOW TO DOWNLOAD WISH LIST.
Special thanks to Second Baptist Church for its monthly support of our program. Special thanks also to Evangel Temple for hosting a special food drive for our program on October 9. Questions? Please contact Anna Gintz (agintz0808@yahoo.com) or Molly Robb (marybrobb@hotmail.com).

Volunteer at Field Elementary - Policies and Information
|
Our volunteer program consists of community members, parents, grandparents, local businesses and organizations who acknowledge the importance between community involvement and education. Our volunteers work in a variety of capacities, both inside and
outside the classroom from mentoring or tutoring a child to assisting in a school's office or cafeteria.
In order to become a registered volunteer, and keep your volunteer status current, volunteers must complete and return a Volunteer Registration/Background Check Form each year. This form may be obtained by clicking the SPS link below, in the Community Relations Office, or in the main office of our schools. Anyone volunteering directly with children at our school must perform the registration and background check.

Field Flyer is Green!
|
We have been able to reduce paper waste by using Constant Contact as the primary distribution means for our PTA Newsletter and other important notices. The email list is composed annually at the same time as directory publishing. If you have signed up to be included in the 2011-12 Field Directory, you will automatically be included in our Constant Contact email list. You may sign-up for the email list at any time by sending your email address to Carol Wooten at carolwooten@mchsi.com. If at anytime you would like to unsubscribe to our email list, you may do so by clicking the "SafeUnsubscribe" button located at the bottom of every email. For those without access to a computer or email, a limited number of hard copies of the Field Flyer newsletter will be printed and placed in the information stand at the front of the school. Thank you for your support as we move toward becoming a more environmentally-conscious school.
