An Eagle's Eye View...
| Our Shared Perspective... Dr. Nancy Colbaugh, Principal, and Jody Tetlow, PTA President
Five Tips for a Fabulous Summer! From an Educators Perspective: Dr. Nancy Colbaugh... Learning doesn't stop when the textbooks close. There are many opportunities for fun and growth each day. We hope that you find these tips helpful as you start to prepare for the summer months. 1. Continue to foster a love for reading. Bring books for traveling, read aloud as a family, ask questions, start a book club 2. Pick up your pencil and write, write, write! Start a summer journal, log, or scrapbook. This could be an independent or family project. 3. Discover together! Look for opportunities to explore in all of life's moments. In doing so you may help your child prepare for their next year at Field. Here are a few connections you might find which tie into some of our PYP units of inquiry... Kindergarten: Discuss how family life is different in the summer. 1st Grade: Notice the summer weather patterns 2nd Grade: Check out landmarks as you travel both near and far 3rd Grade: Heading to Branson? Check out the rock strata on the way! 4th Grade: After the fireflies, gaze under the summer starry nights, check out the constellations 5th Grade: Let your children capture summer memories as they practice photography skills 4. Let your child's natural curiosity lead you. 5. Have Fun! What are your best childhood summer memories? Time passes by so quickly, be sure to enjoy these days with your family.

From Field's Future Principal, Dr. Janell Bagwell
| Dear Field families: I am Janell Bagwell and will be the new principal at Field Elementary this fall. I am excited about the opportunity to work with the Field community. I know with the retirement of Dr. Colbaugh your community is feeling a great loss, however, we have been working together to provide a smooth transition. I have already met the teachers and been introduced to your students. Additionally, I have met with PTA to determine calendar dates for next school year. I have just begun my study of the PYP program and will be attending training this summer. Dr. Colbaugh and I will continue these efforts over the next few months. Next, let me introduce myself. I grew up in Springfield and attended Evangel University for my undergraduate degree in Education. My Masters in Educational Administration is from Missouri State University and my Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis is from University of Missouri. This is my 15th year of employment with Springfield Public Schools. I started my career as a teacher at Weller Elementary where I taught 4th and 5th grade. I was Assistant Principal at Disney, McBride, and Pleasant View Middle School and Elementary. I have served the last six years as Principal of Mark Twain Elementary. My husband, Doug, and I will celebrate 10 years of marriage this August. Doug is a local businessman and owns his investment banking business. I have one step-son, Damon, who is 13 years old and attends school in Nebraska. As I begin serving at Field, I want you to know that I am dedicated to the education of the students at Field. The experience a child has in elementary years impacts them for life. I look forward to getting to know you and your families as well as exploring the positive possibilities for the future. Dr. Janell Bagwell Principal Mark Twain Elementary

Field's Backpack Program
| Every single week during the school year, many of our students are supplied with backpacks filled with nutritious food to take home over the weekend. As the economy has been weakened, the need has become even greater.
Individually wrapped snack foods are especially needed right now. Monetary contributions are also welcome and help the committee keep backpack items uniform. (The backpack program committee often purchases food in bulk to help stretch PTA dollars further.)
Please give as you are able to help make sure every student in our school is concentrating more on their homework than hunger.

DIG IT!: Dirt Project School Garden UPDATE!
| Field Elementary School is so proud to be the recipient of the DIRT Project School Yard Garden for the fall of 2011. The design process for the garden will begin in September 2011, with installation beginning in November 2011. We will be forming a core school garden team meeting in August to discuss the process, the vision and finalize the garden location.
Once we've met on the specifics, Springfield Urban Agriculture Coalition, our partner organization, will begin the design process, set a date for the unveiling of the garden design and schedule timelines for construction and installation. In preparation for the project, several teachers and a Field parent attended a two-day Life Lab Science Growing Classroom Workshop held at Drury and the mid-town garden. It was a great experience for all the teachers. We came away very excited about the impact a well designed and implemented school garden can have on each grade level here at Field. The curriculum will be inquiry based and fit very well into the Units that we currently study. Each grade level will have some level of participation in the garden! Please consider getting involved in the school garden. We need summer support for the four garden beds that are already up in addition to those who would like to be part of the Field Green Team. Field parents have always been so supportive and we need your help! Come and learn along with us. If you would like to sign up to volunteer or if you have any questions, please contact Debbie Fisher, dfisher@spsmail.org, or Heather Parker, Field parent, hparker417@yahoo.com. |

2011-2012 PTA Board Openings
| Reflections Chair: Reflections is a PTA program which provides students with an opportunity to submit artwork within several possible categories. Each year the number of students who participate in the program has increased! This year, Field was the only Springfield Public School to have a student go on to the National Competition. Without Reflections leaderships at Field this would not be possible. This is a position in which you will be personally making a difference for many students at Field. PTA Membership Chair: Our PTA membership is the driving force of all that we are and do. In this position you would run the membership campaign. This year we have gained 100 more members than last year. Without leadership this would not be possible. Please contact Bill Enos at enos0726@gmail.com and let him know you'd like to join the team next year! If you would like to get involved but are not quite sure where to jump in, contact Jody Tetlow (jodytetlow@gmail.com) or Bill Enos (enos0726@gmail.com). Helping hands and new ideas are always needed. |

Volunteer at Field!
| |
Our volunteer program consists of community members, parents, grandparents, local businesses and organizations who acknowledge the importance between community involvement and education. Our volunteers work in a variety of capacities, both inside and outside the classroom from mentoring or tutoring a child to assisting in a school's office or cafeteria.
In order to become a registered volunteer, and keep your volunteer status current, volunteers must complete and return a Volunteer Registration and Background Check Form each year. This form may be obtained by clicking the SPS Volunteer Registration link below, in the Community Relations Office, or in the main office of our schools.
Upon a clear background check from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, you will be sent written notification (please allow up to 14 business days) which you may be required to present at the school you are volunteering.
