An Eagle's Eye View...
This column features topical conversations from both educator (Dr. Nancy Colbaugh, Principal) and parent (Jody Tetlow, PTA President) perspectives.  ____________

Technology

From an Educators Perspective:  Dr. Nancy Colbaugh...
One of the facts we know about the future is that technology will play an important place in our children's lives. It both excites us and scares us as we see the rapidly-moving pace of technology in our world. One of our "burning questions" is, how do we, as adults, help our students develop an understanding of how to use technology in their learning, when we ourselves often find it a daunting task?

Technology is a huge blessing that comes to us with many challenges. We love it, but we don't understand it. Some things become evident very quickly. For example, the first time I saw baby chicks pecking their way out of the egg while the whole first-grade class looked, not into the cage, but larger than life on the classroom screen, I knew how the visual presenter, or as we affectionately call "the ELMO," (not a Muppet) could be used for inquiry-based learning. Every classroom has a laptop, projector, and an ELMO.  http://www.elmo.co.jp/doc-cam/what/

This year, we purchased 'Alpha Smarts' for third and fourth grades, with thirty keyboards for each grade level; the individual keyboards have been used for student writing and the wireless system allows students to print what they type, giving them access to a different way of writing.  http://www.renlearn.com/neo/NEO2/default.aspx

In the next four to six weeks, we will be receiving our SMART boards, which come as a result of bond money you voted on last year. Every classroom will have a SMART board installed by the end of this year. This interactive white board allows access to many online tools for student learning. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION

Each teacher will receive online training with time to work out the kinks in their own implementation of the SMART board. Training must always be an important consideration in implementing any new technology if we are going to maximize student learning.

The week prior to spring break, the SPS Library/Media Services department installed 12 new computers in Field's library, replacing outdated computers. The new computers will greatly enhance the research process for Field students. PTA has agreed to make Technology the focus of our spring card sales fundraiser. You will be hearing more about this in the next few weeks... this is the fundraiser supported by the Citywide PTA, and results in a trip in a limousine to a pizza parlor! It is a favorite for students and results in our purchase of needed materials for our schools.

We are committed to continually moving ahead in this area of knowledge even though it sometimes stretches us! Our students play a unique role in our learning, since they are the 'natives' (technologically speaking) and the adults are the 'immigrants!' Thanks to you all for your great support as we move forward with technology!

From a Parents Perspective:  Jody Tetlow, PTA President...
As a PTA, we are working together to support several identified needs for our school community with our next major fundraiser. We will be kicking off our Education Funding Group card sells on April 19. By participating in the fundraiser we help to support Springfield Council of PTA while meeting needs identified at Field. Last year we were able to purchase the storage shed and outdoor drinking fountains with the funds raised.

This year our goal is to support the following technology needs as identified by site council:
1)   2-3 Laptop Computers
2)   Listening Center
3)   Thumb Drives, Memory Cards, and Head Sets

With these goals in mind, I also wanted to impart this message.

Our children have grown up in a time in which they are immersed in a media-saturated world. They live and breathe technology and it will play an important part in their lives. Many things that we did not have growing up are at their very finger-tips. As learners, if they have a question or need a definition they can Google it.

As a parent, my goal is to help my children find a balance that I fear is lost as our children grow up with this automation. We, ourselves, came from a time of hand-written letters to a time of text messages and tweets. Our process, though, was gradual and developed with technology in comparison to our children who began to learn the ins and outs from birth.

How can we help to ensure that our children maintain balance? How can we help them to move beyond the automation of communication?  How can we teach them how to utilize technology as a tool that facilitates the way they learn and communicate throughout their lives?  These are questions I continue to ask myself as my children grow
and develop.

We are in an exciting time - technology is helping make what was once viewed as impossible as possible. Where we are working together, utilizing technology to make each student's potential a reality.  We do this by helping to ensure that they have the needed tools through our efforts in advocacy and support along with the balance and education to properly utilize them. While the tools may change over time our children will depend on the greatest tool of all- their own minds.

Field's Backpack Program

Every single week during the school year, many of our students are supplied with backpacks filled with nutritious food to take home over the weekend. As the economy has been weakened, the need has become even greater.

Individually wrapped snack foods are especially needed right now. Monetary contributions are also welcome and help the backpack programcommittee keep backpack items uniform. (The backpack program committee often purchases food in bulk to help stretch PTA dollars further.)

Please give as you are able to help make sure every student in our school is concentrating more on their homework than hunger.

Questions? Please contact Molly Robb, marybrobb@hotmail.com.

2011-2012 PTA Board Openings
Reflections Chair:Volunteer Graphic
Reflections is a PTA program which provides students with an opportunity to submit artwork within several possible categories. Each year the number of students who participate in the program has increased! This year, Field was the only Springfield Public School to have a student go on to the National Competition. Without Reflections leaderships at Field this would not be possible. This is a position in which you will be personally making a difference for many students at Field.

PTA Membership Chair:
Our PTA membership is the driving force of all that we are and do.  In this position you would run the membership campaign. This year we have gained 100 more members than last year. Without leadership this would not be possible.

Please contact Bill Enos at enos0726@gmail.com and let him know you'd like to join the team next year!

If you would like to get involved but are not quite sure where to jump in, contact Jody Tetlow (jodytetlow@gmail.com) or Bill Enos (enos0726@gmail.com).  Helping hands and new ideas are
always needed.

Volunteer at Field!

Our volunteer program consists of community members, parents, grandparents, local businesses and organizations who acknowledge the importance between community involvement and education. Our volunteers work in a variety of capacities, both inside and outside the classroom from mentoring or tutoring a child to assisting in a school's office or cafeteria.

In order to become a registered volunteer, and keep your volunteer status current, volunteers must complete and return a Volunteer Registration and Background Check Form each year. This form may be obtained by clicking the SPS Volunteer Registration link below, in the Community Relations Office, or in the main office of our schools.

Upon a clear background check from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, you will be sent written notification (please allow up to 14 business days) which you may be required to present at the school you are volunteering.
