An Eagle's Eye View...
This column features topical conversations from both educator (Dr. Nancy Colbaugh, Principal) and parent (Jody Tetlow, PTA President) perspectives.  ____________

The Learner Profile
It is hard to believe that another year has come and gone and we are now embarking on 2011. With each New Year comes a time of reflection combined with new hopes for the future. While working to create new goals for the days ahead you might consider looking towards our learner profile statements-or asking for your child's input.  In this manner you may work together to strengthen what is being done in the classroom environment at home.

So what is this learner profile all about? At Field there is a unique system in place to help strengthen the continuum of lifelong learning.  This system is central to the PYP program and is called the Learner Profile. Some of you might be very familiar with this set of attributes and others might be new to the process. Most of us are somewhere in between and learning something new each day.

From an Educators Perspective:  Dr. Nancy Colbaugh...
In the school setting, the learner profile is embedded in all that we do. As teachers plan their units of inquiry, they focus on two to three specific profile and attitude words that will be studied with more focus. The words naturally fit into the unit. For example, in the second grade unit "Landmarks" students focus on the words "knowledgeable" and "inquirer".

Words are visible throughout the school, in hallways, on windows, in the lunchroom. This is purposeful, as we are reminding ourselves of the importance of being principled, open-minded, and knowledgeable, no matter where we are in the building. As a faculty, we often refer to the profile and attitude words when we make decisions.

Profile and attitude words are utilized in discipline. We use a "think sheet" that is intended to help students use these powerful words to work through the action cycle (Reflect, Choose, Act). The process is a strong reminder that we all have choices to make as we encounter difficulties and make decisions about our conduct at school.

The most difficult job teachers have is at "grade card" time. Trying to fit any learning and behavior into a little box, using a number or letter, is woefully inadequate to describe a student who is learning and growing every day. It is even more difficult to determine how a student is progressing in the areas of the learner profile and attitude words. IB requires that we report student progress, but suggests we use student reflection as a means of communication. Students usually have good judgment about their strengths and challenges.

The most important thing to remember is that we all are learning and growing in the learner profile and attitude word 'department!'  This is not just a process for children, but for us all. As adults, we model for our students. Some days we do better than others. By creating a shared vocabulary with our children, we can all increase our ability to learn and grow. We are all on a journey, together.

From a Parents Perspective:  Jody Tetlow, PTA President...
In the home setting, these ideals serve to be useful tools which help to motivate and inspire our students. When we as parents model and verbalize the learner profile with our children we are helping bridge the home/school connection. In doing so we are enhancing the development of our child as an on-going learner.

As a school community we work together utilizing the learner profile in our action. We are continually reflecting upon what has been done, asking questions, gaining information, and moving forward with a focus for each child. Many of us strive for balance as we juggle home life, careers, and more. We aim to maintain an open-mind when we are asked to listen to other points of view and utilize the attitude of risk takers when we try something new. All the while we each move forward with our children at the heart of our efforts.

The learner profile may look very different from one person or one family to another.  We all have qualities we might excel at and others which need work. Our hope is that by discussing these attributes with our children on an ongoing basis you may find personal growth in your development as a lifelong learner while supporting the growth taking place for your child.
