Field Cub Scouts
Pancake Breakfast &
Food Drive
The Cub Scouts of Field Elementary have been proud supporters of school programs for over 40 years! Support them as they continue to contribute to such programs as Field's Thanksgiving Baskets and Days of Sharing.

Applebee's Logo
A pancake breakfast will be hosted by the Cub Scouts on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 8 to 10am at Applebee's (near Target). Enjoy delicious all-you-can-eat pancakes and drinks for $5 per person!

After hosting the breakfast, the Scouts will brave the cold and drop off grocery bags to neighborhoods; asking that the bags be filled by the following Saturday. The next week, the Scouts return to the drop area and collect the filled bags. The food collected benefits area efforts (including Field's Days of Sharing) to prevent hunger in our community.
MIDDLE SCHOOL NOTES AVAILABLE

See someone doing something exceptionally nice at Field? Turn them in for a
Slice of Nice!

A Slice of Nice to:
School secretary J.J. Dixon for always having a smile and being so helpful!

All of the donors who contributed to our new playground equipment. It's being installed and the students are so excited!

Dr. Nancy Colbaugh for arranging the middle school informational meetings held in November!

The Box Top Brigade... you know who you are! These ladies spend hours every year trimming out all those teeny, tiny Box Tops and submitting them on time for redemption!

and finally...

To all the Homeroom Chairs - winter parties are coming up and we want you to know how appreciated your efforts are! Thanks for all you do week in and week out!

An Eagle's Eye View...
This column features topical conversations from both educator and parent perspectives.

Top Ten Things to Be Thankful For

From an Educator's Perspective... Dr. Nancy Colbaugh, Principal
and
From a Parent's Perspective... Jody Tetlow, PTA President

As we contemplated this month's Eagle Eye View article, we felt overcome with thankfulness about all the great and wonderful things that make up the Field Community. We are blessed to be involved with such an amazing group of people. Here is our Top Ten list!

#10 - Wonderful Fall Weather
We are thankful that it did not rain during our first International Walk to School Day, that it was not freezing during Fall Festival, and for all of the many bright, sunny, and unseasonably warm days we have had thus far.  These days have made field trips and many school volunteer projects (to include building our new shed, sprucing up our gardens, and helping to collect goods for Days of Sharing) possible and pleasant.

#9 - Student Action
Every week, at least one student comes to the principal's office to talk about their "action plan" - the part of the Primary Years Program where students think about their learning and develop a plan that addresses a need in our school, neighborhood, community, or world. We're thankful that our kids are aware of the needs around them, and that they believe they can make a difference! Action Plans are sometimes as simple as reading a label to find nutritional value in a carton of milk, picking up litter around school, or helping others who are needy.

#8 - Volunteers
We are thankful for all of our volunteers who give their time, thoughts, ideas, concerns, and celebrations.  This year our volunteers have helped to make so many things possible at Field. Whether it is...the Boy Scouts and their leaders picking up 1,000 bags of donated food or the volunteers who will help to sort the food thereafter; the Girl Scouts whose green thumbs have helped plant many flowers and trees; or those who provide heartfelt gifts to our faculty and staff throughout the year;  the homeroom parents who help support our classrooms; the volunteers who cut, sort, and send off our labels from Box Tops, Campbell's Soups, and Sunny-D; or those who bring literature to our students through the Reading is Fundamental or Chat-n-Chew programs; and beyond this each and every volunteer...We are thankful.

# 7 -  IB Program
I'm thankful that we, as teachers, administration, and staff get to work with students on a daily basis, using curriculum and instruction that is designed to help kids learn how to question and think critically about themselves and their world, and to develop into strong, active life-long learners.  I'm thankful that someone "out there" in the world put all these ideas into one plan called the IB/Primary Years Program.

#6 -  WatchDOGS
Having a male presence within our school is incredibly important.  This program adds a measure of safety to our building and helps support the development of all children.  Our WatchDOGS have gone above and beyond.  A very big thanks to Jack Dixon, Brian Weimer, and their families for organizing a great program for our school this year!  WatchDOGS are consistently present at Field helping with on-site projects, reading with students, and supporting our faculty wherever needed.  Thank you fathers, uncles, and grandpas for making this program awesome!

#5 -  A "spirit of giving"
Even in challenging times our families and friends rally together to support needs and opportunities present within our community at Field.   Each opportunity has far exceeded our expectations through the generosity of our families, friends, and business partnerships.  Each and every gift is greatly appreciated and helps to make a big difference at Field!

#4 -  Playground
It was an amazing experience as we all felt the "giving spirit" early in the year and over $7300 was donated in just 10 days! Thanks to everyone who was able to participate. As this Top Ten list goes to press, our playground is being installed! Our students will have a un-filled opportunity to develop physical strength, stamina, and endurance through their play.

#3  Field - Amazing things happen here every day!
We often have the privilege of showing people around our school. Sometimes visitors come from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Sometimes they are local administrators, teachers, or prospective students just checking us out. Every time we talk about the program, we become inspired all over again...why? Because there are amazing things happening here every day. When our teachers go to IB/PYP workshops, they are often asked to share their planners...why? Because they are amazingly well-written. When we talk to students about what they are learning, we're frequently amazed by the depth and quality of their answers. We are thankful for the amazing things that happen here every day.

#2 - Parents/Faculty/Staff/NewStaff
We are blessed to have such a rich variety of people in our school. Students and parents truly care about each other and show their caring in a very tangible way. We are known at Field for caring...what a great thing to be known for!

As we think about our staff, we are thankful for all they bring to their classrooms each day. The level of caring about each student as an individual is heartwarming. There is thoughtful preparation for each day's learning, with collaboration among teachers being the norm. We are especially proud of our new staff members, who have joined us so well on this journey.

#1 -  Children
And where would we be without our children?...our hopes and dreams, our future, our pride and joy. It is with thankful hearts that we do all that we do for their growth and development. Someday they will be the movers and shakers in our community...and in our world.  Above all we are thankful for the amazing kids that come to Field!

Days of Sharing, 2010

We will collect items for DOS during the week of December 6-10!  The classroom wish lists were sent home before Thanksgiving. You may have received this information by e-mail from your homeroom parents as well.  Please let me know if you did not get a copy of your classroom list, and I will be happy to get one to you.

We will have volunteers in the car line each

morning to accept donations!

You do not need to leave your car, simply let us know you have a donation and we will take it for you right there!  We will also have a collection box inside the entry.

Thanks to all who have given gifts and monetary donations!

If you would like to make a monetary donation, please make checks to Field PTA, and send attention to Ann Howard.  Gift card donations are also very appreciated, especially to any shoe store, Target and Wal-Mart.

We have Wishing Stars in the entry of the school!

These stars list items needed for Days of Sharing, and all cost $10 or less.  If you would like to purchase one of the items on the stars, simply take that star with you to use as a reminder when you shop.  Put the item in the wishing star basket in the school entry at your convenience.

Wednesday, December 8th is Dollar Day!

If you would like to contribute a dollar on this day, all donations will be used to purchase gifts for Days of Sharing.

As you can see, there are many ways to

participate in Days of Sharing!

Please consider if you can help with purchasing a gift from your child's classroom list, giving a monetary gift/gift card, purchasing an item on the Wishing Stars, or bringing a dollar on Dollar Day.   If you can help in any of these areas, it would be so very appreciated. Please contact me with any questions at bah2004@live.com or 868-8123.

Much thanks!
