An Eagle's Eye View...a new column
| This new column features topical
conversations from both educator and parent perspectives. Parent-Teacher Conferences (Conferences will take
place November 1-4) We hope that this Fall is greeting you and
your families well and that you have settled back to the school routine with
ease. Over the next few weeks we
will have the opportunity to prepare for our first Parent Teacher Conferences,
which will take place in early November. One of the goals of PTA is to strengthen the relationship between home
and school, so that parents and teachers may work together to make each child's
potential a reality. We thought we
would work as a team to share our perspectives from two vantage points... a
parent's and a principal's. From an Educator's Perspective... Dr. Nancy Colbaugh, Principal As conference week gets closer (even though we're in October, we know how fast the days pass) we realize you're excited and a
little nervous as you approach the conference. It may be helpful to know that
we're excited and a little nervous, too! Most of the time, conferences go very
well, but we fully realize we are talking about your child...your baby...and
sometimes we have to share news that's not altogether positive. Children behave
differently in a classroom situation (with an audience) than when they're in a
one-on-one environment with a parent. The teacher is your window into the ways
your child acts and reacts with their peers. What we don't want the conference to be about is...the grade card. The
reason? That one letter, A, B, C, or number, 1, 2, 3, cannot in any way
adequately express who your child is as a learner. Your child is a complex and
ever-changing person with strengths and challenges and we want to honor his or her
uniqueness. I think a common frustration is the lack of adequate time
for conferences; we all wish we had more time. With 24-27 conferences per
teacher, there is a real incentive for starting and ending the conferences on
time. We love to have 100% parent participation. It helps for parents to come together rather than schedule
separate conferences, even if you are not living in the same household.
However, teachers want to talk with you, so we'll make arrangements for two
conferences when necessary. Please remember that your child's teacher is right along
side you, serving as an advocate and guide. We are a team, and working together
is the very best way to see great results as we progress through the year. Best
wishes and may you come to the conference to talk about...not the grade...but the
child. From a Parent's Perspective... Jody Tetlow, PTA President As parents, I feel that we can at times come into the
conference with some apprehension. We want our children to do their very best while enjoying
their experience. From the moment
we learn that we are going to become parents we take on a role as the number
one advocate for our child. We bring vital information about our child to the table and
we are an essential ingredient to a successful outcome. We might have differences in our style
of communication and our prior knowledge, but when we focus on our common goals
and approach new ideas, questions, and concerns with open minds we can move
forward to successful solutions as a team. I recently read an article about Parent Teacher Conferences and
would like to share a few of my favorite finds:
Talk
with your child prior to the conference Over
the next few weeks make a list of your top questions, concerns, and ideas, Express
your appreciation and gratitude to your teacher, your child, and yourself. Lastly, take heart in knowing that you are not alone in your
job as parent. Talk to fellow
parents, enjoy each challenge and celebration, and take good care along the
way.

New Playground Equipment Fund Drive October 8th Deadline
| Dr. Colbaugh is very happy to announce that Field Elementary has been chosen to receive a grant for $30,000 to purchase a play system!
Though Field has been awarded the grant, we still need to raise $5,000 to
purchase a complete package which will include items to further enhance
physical fitness.
Gametime, the company from which the equipment is to be purchased, will
match the $5,000 we raise. This generous match will bring our total to
$40,000 worth of much needed, updated equipment.
Please consider contributing to this special playground fund. Any gift amount, from $1 to $1000, will make a difference and help us reach our goal. Please send your donation in an envelope marked "playground" to your child's class by October 8. (We only have a brief window of opportunity to take advantage of the $5,000 matching funds from Gametime.) Please make checks payable to Field PTA.
If you have any questions, please call Dr. Colbaugh at 523-4800.
Thank you!

Volunteer Policies and Information
| Anyone volunteering directly with children at our school must perform the SPS registration and background check.
In order to become a registered volunteer, and keep your volunteer status current, volunteers must complete and return a Volunteer Registration and Background Check Form each year. This form may be obtained by clicking the SPS Volunteer Registration link below or can be picked up in the volunteer folder at Field's front office window. Upon a clear background check from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, you will be sent written notification (please allow up to 14 business days) which you may be required to present at the school you are volunteering.
