From PTA President... | | I want to thank everybody for a great year! This will be my last message to you in the Field Flyer as the PTA President. Please try not to get too emotional. I will still be available for paid speaking engagements. I figured since Clinton and Bush each made millions with their post presidential speaking tours, I should be no different. In all seriousness, I do want to take this time to highlight some of the achievements of this past year. In order to do this, I first need to recognize that what we were able to do this year is a direct result of all of your contributions and those of the PTA leadership. A special thanks to Karen Gebhardt, Alice Weimer, Kim Woodworth, Tammy Fulk, Becky Fraley, Carol Wooten, Jody Tetlow and Dr. Colbaugh for all they did in helping to lead us through this year. I could not have asked for a better team of people to work with!
Eugene Field has always strived to be a leader in the community in outreach. I am so proud to see our school continue to do this with the Soul Food Backpacks, Days of Caring and the Clothing Bank. We have made a difference in peoples lives with what we do here. We have one of the largest food drives in the city! We have created an atmosphere at Field that encourages people to look beyond the needs of just the school. The incredible amount of work that goes into making this happen is only surpassed by the love and dedication of the leaders of these programs. A special thanks to Molly Robb, Anna Gintz, Paige Rankin, Ann Howard, Amy Scheihing and Pack 214 for all they did in these areas.
I am amazed at the talent of our children. The Reflections program allowed our children to express their artistic abilities with other students across the city and state. They shined! I do not believe any other elementary school surpassed us in awards and honors. Thank you to the leadership of Lori and Ben Edmondson.
I am very proud of the fact that Field was able to step into the 21st century with the electronic media. The goal was to better inform people of what is happening at their school, make it easier for people to get involved with their school and to be more conscientious about the environment. We have done this with the introduction of Constant Contact and Supersaas. We are able to communicate in an instant and have done away with the paper copies of the Field Flyer and other notices. Sorry to Dunder Mifflin but good for the environment! A special thanks to Terra Salinas, Alice Weimer and Carol Wooten for introducing and implementing these programs.
We have done a great job in raising funds for the various projects that the PTA provides to Field in what has been one of the worst economies in years. The PTA has purchased 27 digital cameras for the school, paid for the Discovery Center program, assisted in the cost of field trips, purchased over a $1,000 worth of books for our library as well as many other items. We hope to be able to purchase an outdoor fountain with the money raised from the Money Saver cards being sold this past week. Although it takes many to make all of this happen, nobody could argue the special efforts given by Kim Woodworth in making sure the funds were there. A huge pat on the back to Kim for all that she did this year!
I am also proud of the leadership Tammy Fulk has taken in implementing a new financial program (Moneyminder) that is more user friendly and easier for people to read and understand. It is now much simpler for people to evaluate how much money the PTA has and where it is being spent.
I had a personal goal of trying to get more dads involved with the PTA. This is a goal I shared with the Missouri PTA. Next year, two men are members of the Board of Directors. Bill Enos is serving as President-Elect and Mike Harders as Treasurer. I am very excited about the message this sends to the children. Thank you Bill and Mike for being leaders and good examples to all of us and, most importantly, the children!
As happy I am for the achievements we made this year, I am more excited for what is to come. Jody Tetlow and the newly elected Executive Board (aka Executive Officers) are phenomenal people with a wonderful variety of talents. They are already working hard to make sure next year is a success! I have no doubt that they will succeed.
Finally, I recognize that there are people who I am sure I left out who made huge impacts for the school and the PTA. I apologize and hope you know that you are all appreciated. None of what we needed to do would have gotten done without the team effort that happened this year. To my family and friends, thank you for your help this year and throughout the years. Your love and support has meant the world to me!
I hope everyone has a great end to the school year and a wonderful summer. Thanks for allowing me to serve you, the children and the school.

Daisy Girl Scout Troop's Flower Bed | In the summer of 2009 the Daisy Girl Scout Troop #60016 adopted a raised flower bed at Field Elementary. The Daises used their money from their previous cookie sale to purchase soil, mulch, and plants for this bed they chose to restore. On September 11, 2009, the girls and parent volunteers spent a sunny afternoon planting 100 tulip bulbs, daffodil bulbs, hyacinth bulbs, azalea bushes, hostas, liriope, ferns, colorful pansies and a pink flowering dogwood. This spring the hyacinths and daffodils came up in full force. They were followed by a beautiful display of the tulips. First came the red tulips, then a red and yellow mixture, finally followed by just plain yellow.
On Saturday, April 17, 2010, the flowerbed was vandalized. Every single tulip was broken, smashed, or uprooted (there were at least 60 in full bloom at this time). One of the azalea bushes was ripped in half and uprooted. Many hostas and pansies were uprooted and thrown into the parking lot and school yard. The site was horrific and senseless. Why would someone destroy something so beautiful that this group of girls worked so hard on?
The following Monday, I trimmed back the remaining tulip stems and tried to salvage some of the uprooted bulbs and hosta plants. I left with a bag full of broken plants and flower petals. Then the following Wednesday, as I checked the garden, I was taken aback. Someone (or maybe many) had replaced the damaged plants with a breathtaking display of pansies of every color. This anonymous act of kindness touched me deeper than the vandalism itself. When the vandalism first happened, I wondered if it was worth it to replace the plants or take over another raised bed like we were previously planning. Then this morning, I realized that the smallest acts make the biggest difference. In addition, a kind gentleman from Friends of the Garden (another group frequently affected by vandalism) donated $20 for new plants.
Our Daisy Troop initially made a difference at our school that many of us have enjoyed. Their hard work and these acts of kindness have solidified the importance of making a difference no matter how small or great. Today I witnessed the transformation of something awful into something wonderful. Thank you to everyone out there who care enough to do these acts of kindness that change our world! Words are simply not enough for you.
Thank you,
Heather Parker-Reece |

Field Flyer Goes Green! | Constant Contact has been a tremendous success this year. We have been able to reduce paper waste by making use of Constant Contact as a means to send our PTA Newsletter as well as notifications of events, and last minute changes.
Please, if you have not already signed up for or have not been receiving your e-newsletter, send your email address to Carol Wooten at carolwooten@mchsi.com. For those without access to a computer or email, hard copies of the newsletter will continue to be printed and placed in the flyer distribution stand directly inside the front door at Field. All questions and comments regarding this change may be directed to Alice Weimer at 844-4792 or alice@weimer.cc. Thank you for your support as we move toward becoming a more environmentally-conscious school.
Next year, please be sure to sign-up for inclusion in the Field Directory. Unless otherwise requested by participant, all registered with the directory will automatically be included in the email database. Thank you! |
