A Letter from PTA President
|
The other day I was in one of those heated debates with a group of friends. I forget the exact subject, but you know the types. They usually involve politics, religion or other "hot button" issues. The discussion got to be very rigid in its concept with no gray area. Several people had concluded that for this topic, we all had to be on the same path. This bothered me and I found myself thinking about that for quite some time. Fortunately, I had an epiphany while holding the door open for our kids at Field sometime after the snow storm. I was watching with great amusement at how differently the kids all entered the building. There were those that stayed on the nicely shoveled sidewalks and made a straight line to the door. Some stayed on the sidewalk but zigzagged, skipped or literally hopped into the building. Others made sure they completely avoided the sidewalk and trampled through every last inch of snow they could find before entering the door. I also found it interesting that about ten percent of the kids would not enter the door I opened for them but had to push the automatic door button. Nevertheless, they still made it into the building.
I realized from all of this that it is not always important which path we take, but that it is more critical to know the direction we are going. At Field, we also have a direction we are attempting to take our kids. As a PYP school, Field has a specific PYP Learner Profile. It provides that the children should be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. We also promote specific PYP attitudes of appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, creativity, curiosity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect and tolerance. These are all great traits and actions to incorporate into our life. I would ask you to think about the path you and your child are walking, skipping, running or possibly even crawling on to reach the ultimate destination. The wonderful and even scary part about all of this is that there will be times your child will walk this path without you. However, you can still provide the needed direction when they hit a stumbling block. Remember, there is value even in the stumbling blocks and hurdles that we face. It is my hope that the PTA has been, and will continue to be, a positive force in assisting you, the school and the children in heading in the right direction. Enjoy the journey!

Field Helps Haiti - $1 for $7 Campaign
|
Recently, the island nation of Haiti experienced an earthquake that has affected millions of lives. People are homeless, hungry, thirsty and hurt. Kids Against Hunger is one organization that is trying to bring relief and hope to families and individuals from this nation. Field Elementary would like to take action and make a difference in the lives of Haitians who are in desperate need of food and clean drinking water. By working with Kids Against Hunger, and participating in their relief plans, Field students will make a difference by touching lives.
How can you help? Students may bring monetary donations into school that will be sent directly to Kids Against Hunger. Each dollar you donate is the equivalent of $7 of food in Haiti. Kids Against Hunger will purchase necessary food supplies to build a bundle that will feed a family of 6.
How can I donate? Your child came home with a plastic sandwich bag. Please have your child return their donation into their classroom teacher. If you don't have a bag, simply place your donation in an envelope marked "Haiti."
Can I donate more than once? Yes! Field Elementary will accept donations for the $1 for $7 Campaign through the end of the school year, so that we can continue to help Haiti through this difficult time.

Field Kidz Council
|
Field Kidz Council has been very busy. Recently we raised enough money from Holiday Card sales to buy 30 IB shirts for new students. Kidz Council sold around 2,300 cards to make this possible. Thanks for your support!
Currently we are helping raise awareness for the jeans drive at Field. This drive will help the clothing bank. We encourage you to clean out your closets!
Kidz Council is gearing up for Care-Gram sales. Care-Gram sales will begin February 5th, and will be sold on a donation basis. All proceeds will go to Kids Against Hunger. This organization will send prepared food packages to Haiti with assistance from Convoy of Hope.

Learn More About Middle School Choices
|
Friday, Feb. 19 1:30 Field Library
All are welcome to attend.
Judy Atchley, SPS Parents for Change, will be present to help us wade through some of the
middle school options; there is a lot of information to absorb! She has worked with
a parents group in Springfield, SPS Parents for Change, that advocates
for better middle school choices. Please go to this site,
http://www.freewebs.com/spsparents4change/, and read as much as you
can prior to the meeting. It will give you a lot of information about
what is going on right now in middle schools and perhaps give you a
starting point for questions and discussion for our meeting. Questions? Please contact Ann Howard, bah3@mchsi.com. |
