Parish Website Features: Why St. Mark's Matters to Me
Our website now features the texts of our November speakers, Elise Copley, Carol Holden & Kyle Arrington, and Dcn. Susie's homily, on why St. Mark's matters to them. Do take the opportunity to re-read their thoughts by going to www.stmarksglendale.org and clicking on the link: "New! Stewardship links."

Also take the opportunity to check out the rest of our website. Francey Welker does a great job of keeping our site timely and engaging, and anything you want to know about St. Mark's you will be able to find there, plus lots of photos!

The Living Creche is our annual Christmas gift to the community of Glendale and is an event not to be missed. This year's creche is on Friday, December 16, beginning at 6:00 pm. Returning this year as the evening's coordinators are Brian Hall and Phillip Brock. There will be live animals, nativity costumes, an opportunity for young and old alike to mingle with the animals in celebration of the Nativity, refreshments aplenty, the singing of carols, and a Christmas pageant written and produced by Brian and Phillip and starring the children and youth of St. Mark's. Mark your calendars now and join us for a fun, touching and inspiring evening.

Christmas Eve Services
Christmas Eve at St. Mark's begins with a service of Lessons, Carols & Sung Mass at 5 pm, featuring individuals and families joining the choir, and the youth of the parish serving as lectors, greeters and element bearers, as well as acolytes. The choir will offer 'Jesus Christ the Apple Tree', 'Balulalow' and 'I Wonder as I Wander', along with several carols for everyone to sing.

At 10:30 pm, the Midnight Mass is preceded by Christmas carols sung by congregation and choir, followed at 11 pm with the Festal Procession & Sung Mass and featuring special musical accompaniment. The Prelude of Carols will include 'The First Nowell' and the 'Ave Maria' of Franz Bieble. Saturday Morning Yoga Returns in January
After a brief hiatus, Lisa Gibson's yoga classes will return on Saturday, January 14 and take place every Saturday. Classes are at 8:30 am til 9:45 am in the church. The class is open to students of all levels and ages, including those who have never tried yoga in the past. There is a suggested donation of $10 per class for those with the ability to donate. Proceeds benefit St. Mark's as well as fund the instruction. Please do join us; bring a friend! Lisa recommends comfortable clothing, a towel or small blanket and a yoga mat (the mat is desirable but not required).

Sunday Adult Christian Education Offerings
Upcoming Sunday offerings include:
  • Through Advent: Fr. James Furman offers a 4-Sunday series in the flavor of Advent. Keep an eye out for upcoming parish email updates for more details.
  • January:  January kicks off with a Budget forum on the 15th at 9 am and 11:45 am in the library. Bring your questions about stewardship, the budget process or the 2012 budget. This is an important forum for all members. On January 22 and 29 Mary Manning leads a two Sunday series on the ministry of the Daughters of the King and prayer. If you are curious about the Daughters of the King, or prayer as ministry, or simply feel called to ponder prayer more deliberately, this is the series for you. There is no adult education on January 8.
  • February: Bruce Merritt returns with more on the history of St. Mark's, Feb. 5, 12 & 19.
  • Lenten Series: Fr. Bill Leeson and Rebecca Lemon offer "Anglicanism and English Literature" the five Sundays in Lent, beginning on February 28.

Wednesday Adult Christian Education
  • January & February: Julianne Homokay facilitates a journaling workshop, beginning January 11 through February 15. Have you been interested in doing some creative writing but have no idea where to start?  There's a reason why so many writing teachers urge you to "write what you know."  Chances are there are dozens of anecdotes from your own life that could inspire a creative piece. The journaling and writing exercises in this workshop are specifically geared to tap your own stories and turn them into fiction, poetry or drama. You do not want to miss this series!
  • March: Our adult education series, Living the Questions, resumes, an engaging video discussion format reaching into questions of our faith and our life together as Christians. All are welcome, no previous experience is required, and we know that you will find the program both meaningful and fun.

Tuesday Evening Bible Study Continues
Join Jason Van Borssum at his Tuesday evening Bible study on December 20 from 7 pm til 8:15 pm in the library. Beginning December 27 the Bible Study will go on a short hiatus, resuming in January, a date to be decided. Stay tuned to our parish email updates.

St. Laurence's Guild Meals this Winter
St. Laurence's Guild returns in February with the always popular Chinese New Year meal with top chefs Monique Poon and Sumako Totten. March features Corned Beef 'n' Cabbage and Ham, with top chefs Orlando Bonnelly and Maria Maribal. St. Laurence's Guild meals are the first Sunday of the month immediately following the 10 o'clock Mass. This is a great way to introduce family, friends, neighbors and coworkers to St. Mark's!

Special Concert on February 4 with Crescendo Young Musicians Guild

The Music Guild presents the Crescendo Young Musicians Guild in concert on February 4, 2012 at 7 pm. CYMG is a new Glendale/Los Angeles organization providing music instruction in group settings to children and youth, and they offer classes during the week here at St. Mark's. The Crescendo Young Musicians Guild is a non-profit music education and community service organization that provides quality music instruction, mentoring and performance opportunities to students who may otherwise not be able to have them. CYMG promotes a spirit of service while bringing students and families of all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds together to work toward a common goal: to enrich their communities through music." (Mission Statement from  www.cymg.org) The instructors and students of Crescendo will be our performers, and our outreach ingathering will go to support their work.
