Issue No. 8.11August 2011
Greetings!

As the "Dog Days" of summer approach dreams of cool Jazz and hot blues abound at the High Point Theatre. Season and single tickets are available for all of our shows, and we even have some terrific deals for a Room and Show getaway with three local properties: The High Point Best Western Plus, J.H. Adams Inn and The Courtyard by Marriott. I know for many of you just coming to see a show is a treat, but think about spending a "Staycation" at one of local hoteliers .

Another reason to think about HPT as a destination is our wonderful meeting rooms. Treat your group or organization to a meeting space surrounded by wonderful art provided by the Theatre Art Galleries organization. Two new exhibits are available in our Main Gallery and upstairs Gallery B. For rental information contact the theatre administrative offices.

The HPT Advisory Board is made up of community volunteers serving on a rotating basis and approved by the City Council. Our current board features: Johann Mosley-Chair, Leslie Graham, Jamlye Acevedo, Stephanie Coggins, Barbara Taylor, Latimer Alexander IV, Catherine Bencini and Judith Cranford. If you are interested in serving on our board, please visit the City of High Point website and submit an application to volunteer. We are looking for engaged, enthusiastic leaders to take HPT to the next level.

July Devoted to Giving Theatre Much Needed LTC!

James Sanding Stage

With so many activities taking place at the Theatre, there's a lot of wear and tear on the facility as you can well imagine. Twice each year, typically in July and January, we just have to take the time to address both

routine and much more comprehensive

maintenance as we prepare for the launch of the theatre's new season, furniture market activities, NC Shakespeare Festival productions and much more!

Technical director James Rickards is shown here as he sanded and painted the stage after use by local dance shops/studios during May and June for their student recitals. He also checked, repaired or replaced lighting and audio equipment, including cables, as required. Todd Dupree, facility manager, spent a good deal of time addressing locks, door codes, inspection of fire extinguishers and other equipment, plus a host of other maintenance tasks. House manager Karen Rimmer thoroughly cleaned and organized areas in and around the front entrance, concession stand and those eerie dark corners of storage closets.

Now that we have our house in order, we look forward to hosting you soon at one of our exciting events. And, we hope you enjoy your visit as much as we enjoy having you here!

Volunteers at Work

 by Karen Rimmer

The High Point Theatre Volunteer Program is a strong group consisting of more than 50 people who bring many years of experience to the theatre.  This group does more than just greet you at the door, offer concessions and help you to find your seat, they also participate in, and contribute their time and energy to, other organizations as well.

We are very fortunate to have among them:

Joe GambleJoe Gamble, recently honored by Trinity High School for his dedication to teaching and encouraging students to study music.  Top honors came when it was announced that the THS Theatre would now be known as the Joseph P Gamble Center for Performing Arts.

Curtis Connor, currently serving on the Board for the Friends of the Theatre, is a former pilot for the Air Force and serves on the planning committee for Thomasville's annual Memorial Day celebration.

Lucile Hurley, also serving on the Board, is active at the Roy B. Culler Jr. Senior Center.

Valerie Gardner champions for the MS cause.

Jane Blackwell, High Point Bank, has hosted numerous Community Fairs.

Bravo to all our volunteers for they truly do make a huge difference! If you'd like to learn more about volunteer opportunities here at the theatre, please give me a call.
