Greetings!
Welcome to the Summer 2010 edition of our newsletter. I hope you'll join us in welcoming summer, and in hoping 2010 is a busy year! In this edition I'd like to discuss why we do what we do. Of course, everyone has basic needs, but what drives us beyond that? What makes us feel good about putting in that extra effort? At METALEX, we've got some motivations that go beyond food, clothing and shelter, and they are pretty dear to our hearts.
Stettler (population ~ 6,000) and the surrounding communities are home for most of us. Call us red-neck, country bumpkins, whatever, but it is a way of life that thrives on hard work, challenges and being an active part of the community. We may very well be one of the last places on Earth where people often don't lock their home at night, and leave their keys in their vehicle because it is hard to lose them if they never leave the ignition!
Community is the part I want to talk about. Like any other Alberta town, sport makes up a big part of what brings us all together. We strive to be a part of that connection and METALEX contributes in a number of ways. Besides donating time, labor and money to numerous sporting associations, we use community causes to fill in our schedule. Rather than send someone home early or give them a day off, we try to keep a selection of projects on our job board. It is really a win, win win situation.
The sports club wins with a new golf shack, sports storage building or funding for operations - our staff wins by keeping busy and employed - and METALEX wins by giving back to the community in which we live.

Many of our staff, their family, friends and neighbors contribute the most valuable resource of all -"time". Organizing, administrating, coaching, driving, feeding, housing, nursing, you name it, there is no end to the tasks required to build a healthy and happy community organization.
Of course, the benefit is somewhat selfish. It is us, our kids and friends that make use of these facilities, but if we all band together, it bonds the community. And that has got to be a good thing! We're big believers in "what goes around, comes around", and giving to our community always comes back to us in spades!
Feel free to give us feedback anytime! And not just on our newsletter, but our products and service too! Send your comments in total confidence right to the top - Lorisa@mmbi.ca or Clay@mmbi.ca.
and meet some of our staff, view some of our products and let us know what you think.

Is Bigger Better?
"Every success is built on the ability to do better than good enough."
- Author Unknown
Is Bigger Better? |
Economy of Scale. Mass production. Monopoly. Standard business theory maintains two core fundamentals: You must make profit to grow, and growth provides opportunity to reduce the cost of production.
I'm not going to argue with all those PhD's whether Volkswagen can make a car cheaper than I can or not. Even I understand that if you buy a million widgets, there is a strong chance you'll get a better price than the person buying only one.
But at what volume-point does each individual widget start to become less important than the entire batch? When does price begin to over-ride quality? I have always been told that "Value" consists of three components. 1) Price, 2) Delivery, and 3) Quality. I may be alone but I feel that in some industries the emphasis has been put on price and delivery, at the expense of quality. And I'm OK with that, if that is what the customer truly wants, but there will always be a minimium line of quality which we will never stoop below.
As a result, some businesses seem focused on growth, for growth's sake. The problem with that is many businesses put all their eggs in one basket - one product, one customer, one industry. They begin to see anything that looks like an order as more revenue to feed the growth. Next thing you know, they are big, but they don't do any one thing particularly well. Or the growth has occurred at such a rapid rate there was no time for refinement of processes or effective training of staff. It's like Larry the Cable Guy says, "Git 'er done!". Some things just take time, and being good at something is one of them.
It might sound like sour grapes since we are not among the "bigger" players in our industry, but we have chosen to focus more on getting better at what we feel are the important things, in lieu of getting bigger. Or, at least when we decide its time to get bigger, we'll be prepared to do it right. Rome wasn't built in a day (although we feel with some of our standard building designs, it could be done in a month!).
One of the most effective ways to get good at something is to listen to your customers:
Q. WHAT METHODS CAN BE USED TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK?
A. PHONE. EMAIL. FAX. OR DROP BY. We prefer to hear directly from anyone who deals with us, and not just the end user. It is ultimately important that the building does what it is supposed to, but there are many players invloved in the conception, design, quoting, re-design, ordering, fabrication, production, transportation, and assembly of any steel building. And if they can all help us improve just a teensy-weensy bit, then we can become even better than we already are.
METALEX Metal Buildings is anxious to hear from you. Call us to experience service and project execution evolved from years of fine-tuning. Or let us know what we could be doing better. Consider us for your next bid request for any Metal or Steel structure requirements, and put our dedication to "quality-first" to the test!

VACATIONS
Don't underestimate their value
 |
SUMMER is the time of year when many people plan their only major vacation.
A lot of us make winter getaways, and often they are relaxing and help us get through the cold, dark season. But studies have shown that many people need at least a week to begin to unwind, and some of us don't take vacations without coercion.
"The 6th annual Expedia.ca and Ipsos Reid survey reports that 29% of employed Canadians are not taking all of their yearly-allotted vacation days. This figure is up from the 21% found in 2007 and if your company has similar rates to the national average, your company could be in trouble."
Beverly Beuermann-King, CSP, Stress and Wellness Specialist, who authors a corporate wellness newsletter says "Holidays are essential to healthy workers, yet three in ten put holiday on standby."
"It may be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that employees who don't use up their allotted time are actually costing the company less. In fact, the Expedia.ca survey calculates that approximately $6.3 billion is being handed back to employers in unused holidays each year. However, employees who do not access all of their allotted vacation are probably costing the company in the long run through increased sick time, accident rates, burnout and prescription benefits."
Further, if you aren't functioning at or near your peak at work, what could this say about your home-life? The study doesn't say, but I believe the underlying message for us at METALEX is that since we work hard, (some of us put in extremely long hours), taking a real vacation is an essential ingredient for our continued success. So please bear with us if someone is on holidays - it's important to us to keep our staff healthy.

Western Canada Drilling Stats
If you draw any relation between your business, the economy, and the amount of drilling activity in Canada, these drilling statistics might interest you. Below, you will find the latest week this year compared to last year.
Comparing a single week, year to year (2009 to 2010), Alberta is up more than 100% over last years activity. BC and Saskatchewan are both up almost 100% over this time last year. Manitoba and NWT remain essentially unchanged.
All in all, things are much busier now than this time last year in Western Canada, and the general consensus on Natural Gas is that demand is set for record growth.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL -
I have been working with Metalex for several years now and I can honestly say I am very happy with the service they have provided. The quality of their product is outstanding and the pricing is very competitive. Any issues we may have had with Metalex were resolved very quickly with our delivery dates in mind. The quotations dept has never been more than 2 days getting a quote to me which has helped me immensely. All of the people at Metalex are very courteous and have the best interest of NWP Industries in mind. We would like to continue working with Metalex for the long foreseeable future.
