A Message from Our CEO
| |
Dear Friends,
As a follow up from my last message, I want to share with you that we have indeed accomplished many of the changes that were planned to occur during the past 3 months. We have moved people served from the homes that we were closing either into one of our homes where we had an opening, or into a home with another service provider. Leadership positions that were based at our Buffington office are now at our Old Ellis office, creating just one administrative location. With the restructure of our Leadership staff we have hired two new team members, Janna Zwerner as our Chief Operating Officer and Joy Miles as our Director of Human Resources. We all look forward to their assistance with helping enhance enAble's sustainability into the future.
I had previously mentioned that we were looking at a build out of our Old Ellis warehouse area to increase our capacity to serve young adults and high school students with special needs. I am absolutely thrilled to let you know that we have been most fortunate to connect with Jerry Cooper, founder and Board Chair of Cooper Carry, the Center of Connective Architecture. Jerry has offered to develop new floor plans for the entire building and help secure pro bono work to complete this project. We are all so deeply grateful for his generosity and touched by his dedication to people with special needs.
I also wish to share with you that our Gala Host Committee, led by Vicki Gordon, enAble's Board Chair, and Peggy Farris, one of our dedicated family members, is up and running. Our Host Committee will be launching a spectacular event on March 2, 2013 - the celebration of our 25th Anniversary Gala. Further, we will again be soliciting nominations for the Special Education Teacher of the Year Award. I encourage everyone to nominate a Special Education Teacher that makes a difference each and every day. You can find the nomination form here.
And last but not least, if you haven't already "LIKED" us on Facebook, please do so. We have so many stories to share that I know you will find inspiring.
Best regards,
Cecelia M. Camp

Ginny & Bruce Riley: "It's Our Story"
| |
Ginny Riley and her son Bruce took part in the "It's Our Story" project when it visited Atlanta recently. This project is a country-wide initiative to make disability history national and accessible. Over 1,000 video interviews were conducted with disability leaders across the nation. "It's Our Story" is now making those voices public and accessible so that everyone may take part in a discussion about what it means to be an American with a disability.
enAble was fortunate to get two slots to record the Riley Family history that also included our founding in 1979. Melissa C., the Office Assistant at our Buffington Center location, was also recorded. Way to go, Ginny, Bruce and Melissa!

Person Served Spotlight: Caroline Shiver
|
Caroline began receiving services at enAble in late 2010. She shares a warm and inviting home with Paula, Leigh, and Jessica S., with whom she became fast friends. Caroline works at Caren Products, a skin care company located in Roswell. She handles product samples by placing foam inserts inside lids. Caroline's favorite thing to do at work is a task that she recently learned: filling tiny containers with lotion, a task that involves concentration, precision and dexterity. She's very proud of her latest accomplishment and so are we. In her spare time, Caroline likes painting her nails (her favorite color is pink), eating hot dogs with ketchup, and going to the movies. The most recent film she saw at the theater was "The Lion King 3D".

Volunteer Spotlight: Great Days of Service
|
 | |
Johns Creek UMC volunteers
|
Johns Creek United Methodist Church volunteers, led by Bob Tucker, completed a Great Day of Service Project at en Able's Holcomb Bridge residence on September 8. The group pressure washed sidewalks, stepping stones, and decks, cleaned up the yards, landscaped, and washed all windows inside and outside. | |
Northbrook UMC volunteers
|
Northbrook United Methodist Church volunteers, led by Russell Blocker, finished a Great Day of Service Project at our Grimes Center. Their day mirrored Johns Creek's in that Northbrook also pressure washed sidewalks, stepping stones and decks, landscaped, and washed all the windows at Grimes Center. We at en Able greatly appreciate the time, effort, and resources of these and all our volunteers. Thank you! |

Staff Member Spotlight: Janna Zwerner
| |
Janna began working at enAble in the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) this past June. As COO, she provides oversight for finance, facilities, and programs including medical services. Janna's goal for her first 6 months at enAble is to conduct a thorough review of all operations. Toward that end, she hopes to expand certain programs and develop new services that will generate revenue and enhance the independence of the individuals served.
Prior to enAble, Janna served as COO of the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors for 2 ½ years.

We're aware that adopting greener practices and policies, conserving energy and building green can not only positively impact our organization's energy use and efficiency, but also positively impact the environment and the communities in which we live and work.
We have undertaken a number of green activities here at enAble:
- More diligent recycling
- Reducing plastic water bottle use
- Reducing paper use by making front/back copies, and printing only
what is necessary
- Energy conservation (turning off lights when not in use/computers
during non-working hours)
