Dear Friends,
I'd like to thank you for your support of enAble's 23rd Annual Gala held on Saturday, March 12 at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia. I'm both thrilled and proud to announce that our net proceeds for this event reached just over $295,000! The Fund-A-Need portion of the Live Auction at the Gala, which addressed our Medical Assistance Fund, was truly amazing and singlehandedly raised more than $100,000!
Everyone at enAble, from the people we serve and their families to our staff and Board of Directors, are immensely thankful and grateful to all who helped this event exceed even the highest expectations. Because of your generosity, several of the people we support who require medical and dental care that is not covered by their Medicaid or Medicare funding will be able to receive the healthcare they need. Further, the Gala proceeds will be used to cover expenses that we incur through operating and maintaining 18 personal care homes, three Day Service centers, and two administrative offices. Only 13.6% of our income is spent on administrative expenses; the remaining 86.4% is spent on program services benefiting the people we support.
In light of this tremendous accomplishment, we at enAble must keep in mind the reality of our financial situation. Recent state budget cuts to Medicaid funding, which constitutes the majority of our revenue, have created a significant deficit that we are working diligently to address and overcome. Every contribution we receive is put to immediate and good use in efforts to close this budget gap. We need your financial support more than ever as we continue to provide the best possible services to more than 100 dynamic and deserving individuals, and while we also work to create new revenue streams in support of our new strategic plan.
Again, thank you for helping us further our mission of supporting people with special needs to lead fulfilled lives - physically, intellectually, and socially.
Kindly,
Cecelia M. Camp

Volunteer Spotlight - Denise Jordan Lane | |

Chris and Denise at enAble's
23rd Annual Gala on March 12, 2011 |
Applause and voices shouting, "DJ!" can be heard from enAble's Old Ellis Road Day Services Center on Wednesdays at 1:30. Why? It's all for the individuals' volunteer Spanish teacher, Denise Jordan Lane, fondly known as "DJ." She stimulates Spanish conversation through reading books, hosting activities, and by simply having a relationship with several attentive and delighted people who are ready to have fun with DJ.
"DJ graciously exemplifies a thirst for life. I adore her and wish she could be cloned." says Amy Vergith, Support Manager of Day and Employment Services. Further, Amy wonders, "Just how much can DJ get out of a day?" You might marvel as well to know that DJ volunteers at her church and has home schooled her sons, Braeden, 16, and Bronson, 14, for seven years.
For the past 2 ½ years, DJ has been writing a novel and has 90% of the first manuscript completed. In addition to 2 years of teaching beginning Spanish to those served at the Old Ellis center, she ably served on our 23rd Annual Gala Host Committee. DJ is currently helping enAble grow its social networking identity on Facebook and would be thrilled if you "like" us.
DJ and her husband Chris became involved with enAble over 10 years ago by attending our Gala fundraiser. It did not take long for them to understand the best part of the event was the relationship with the people we serve, and the need to financially support our mission.
What does DJ receive from her enAble volunteer experience? Recently, she said it best herself. "I just want to tell you how filled up those 'kiddos' at enAble get me each time I'm with them. Thirty minutes of Spanish class equals 30 minutes of laughing, hugs, smiles, and una palabra o dos (a word or two) tossed in for good measure. There is nothing like being with the people enAble supports. That's what it's all about in my book. I can't be away from them. They lift me up."
We are grateful to DJ and all our volunteers who help enhance the life of those supported by enAble. |
