Facebook The do's and don'ts of contests, sweepstakes & other types of promotions.
All of us are aware how Facebook can build and boost our photography business! It is a tremendous tool! Many photographers are running contests, sweepstakes and other types of promotions on their Facebook Fan Pages. I am even guilty of this! Facebook has some very strict guidelines regarding these types of things that all of us should be aware of to avoid having our Fan Page shut down!
First, Facebook defines a 'sweepstakes' to be "a promotion that includes a winner and a prize selected on the basis of chance." Second, the definition of a "'contest' or a 'competition' is a promotion that includes a prize and a winner on the basis of skill". Third, Facebook goes on to state in their terms of service that "publicizing a promotion on Facebook means publicizing, advertising, or referencing a promotion in any way on Facebook or using any part of the Facebook Platform."
Section 2 of the Facebook Promotion Guideline states everything that is prohibited. The first statement says: "You may not publicize or administer a promotion on Facebook IF: The promotion is marketed or open to individuals under the age of 18." For my business this is a big restriction! 65% of my business comes from High School Seniors that the majority of are under the age of 18!
Section 3. Administering a Promotion through the Facebook Platform. This section tells us that we can not administer any promotion through the Facebook Platfrom WITHOUT the prior written approval of Facebook! YEA! Promotions are back!
So now you are asking how do I receive 'prior written approval' from Facebook to run this totally awesome promotion? You will need to contact an account representative at Facebook. To contact an account rep at Facebook, there is a form on the Promotions Guidelines page under Section 3.
Section 4. Publicizing a promotion on Facebook is an interesting section. It states that 'you do not need prior written approval if you are publicizing a promotion that is administered completely off of Facebook." That means that if you are running a promotion on your blog for example, then you can post it on your Fan Page to make people aware of it. That's good news!
This section goes on to state "we may remove any materials relating to the promotion or disable your Page or account if we determine that you violate these Promotion Guidelines, the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities or any other of our policies."
As you can see, Facebook has clearly stated and defined their stance on promotions, contests, & competitions. When in doubt, ask Facebook. All they can do is say no and tell you why.
Happy Facebooking!
