Bonded Sports Magnets have returned!
Sports Magnets
Back in February we announced that we were switching our Sports Magnets to a thinner printable magnet material to avoid the rising production costs. That change has been going over very well.

At the request of a few photographers that would like to see the old bonded style magnets return as an option you, we are bringing those back.  Beginning today you have the option of choosing between the old photographic bonded magnets and new printable magnet versions.  Please review the following descriptions to assure that you order the correct style.

Bonded Magnets - The images are printed onto photographic paper. Production then hand cuts and bonds the print to a thick magnet.  The end result is a thicker and stronger magnet.

Standard Magnets - These magnets are directly printed onto a flexible magnetic substrate resulting in a thinner finished product.

Rumors are flying!

Someone has been saying that BRI might be offering fabric covered Photo Books soon.  For the record, I'm going to be looking into that and will share my findings in next weeks newsletter.

It's amazing what people will ask for.  Next thing you know we'll be getting requests for Photo Boxes or better yet...(to be continued)

Black River Imaging products.

This week - Enter for a chance to win:

1 Standard and 1 Modern Calendar

This offer includes two of our popular calendars. If you are looking for a basic calendar with blank days your clients can write on then a Standard calendar may be a good option. You can enter any image in the top portion of each month while the bottom half of this 8.5x11 calendar is not adjustable.

The Modern Calendar is a great way to show off your images in a contemporary format. Since this calendar is designed to place a strong emphasis on your images the dates and days of the week are in simple form across the bottom. This calendar is 11x17 when displayed.

This week's offer includes:

Work doesn't have to be work

As with any business, there are multiple parts or departments of a successful photography studio. However, most photographers are handling all departments alone. I started that way for the first two years, and now have two people that are instrumental in keeping my business going. You may be thinking that I am talking about a second shooter or someone that can help with editing (that would be nice, but I can't afford it). I had to evaluate what part or parts of my business were keeping me so busy that I couldn't enjoy life.

First, I had my wife quit her job and gave her control of the office as an office manager. She is great with customers and she looks at my photos from a client's point of view, which is a priceless tool when you need an honest critique of what your customers will like.  She does all of my consultations and setting up timelines for the weddings, and even handles late payments. Since having her as my partner, I have been paid 100% for all accounts.

The other important department for me was accounting. I think we all hate it or else we would have chosen accounting as our profession. I found someone that has his own reputable accounting business with reasonable rates. He has opened up a lot of time for me by taking all receipts and deposits from me every month and itemizing everything to include in figuring out estimated sales tax. I personally will never do that stuff again because life is too short! My taxes are already done for this year, my wife is downstairs meeting with Saturday's bride, and I am upstairs writing this article with my dog in my lap watching the Today Show. If it was wedding season, I would be editing, but that's the point. I have relinquished control over things that I know others can do better and more efficiently than me and I am rewarded for it by getting some extra time to do what I want with. Everyone is different, so I would recommend everyone evaluate your work-flow and reevaluate it every year to see what is making you crazy and then find a possible solution.

I'm not trying to write a novel, so I will try and wrap this up with one more point and maybe I can add to this in the future. Do not overbook yourself to the point that you are getting burnt out. I know this from my own experience, because I was getting burnt out early last year even with two people helping me. I have taken the last six months and learned how to turn down business because even though I could find time to fit another shoot in, it was going to add a lot of stress to my life. If you have looked at your camera or computer with a sad face like a kid looking at a pile of dishes in the sink they have to wash, you need to release some control and maybe turn down a client or two so as to not loose the passion that prompted you to start the business in the first place. With that said, I will leave you with a tip from me about editing work-flow which most of you may already know but may not want to take the initial time to set it up. Create a start to finish, step-by-step way to handle every wedding and portrait session and repeat it for all your clients until you need to adjust for new products or styles. This will make every event or session you edit easier and faster as you go until you are like a fine tuned machine.
