Stop Cropping & Roll With It!
When it comes to shooting
sports teams, one common area that can make or break a good photo is paying due
care and attention to cropping and framing. Here are a few pointers to help
avoid some common snafus!
WELCOME TO ORIENTATION! - Always
try to shoot your groups horizontal & your individuals vertically. As well
as being good composition, this format is necessary if ordering specialty items
such as traders, magazine covers, etc.
HANG
LOOSE! - Although many photographers like a nice tight image with little
wasted space, it is important to remember that the 4x6 aspect ratio captured by
most DSLR's is a lot wider than many of the products ordered. For example, if
ordering an 8x10, you will lose approximately 1/6 of the total length of the
image - not fun for the person on the end of a group shot!
RACK 'EM &
STACK 'EM! - Football teams can represent some of the largest group shots
you may encounter on the sports field. Where possible, take advantage of
bleachers to "stack" the players higher, rather than spread the team out too
wide. While extra-wide composites are available for football, you may run into
cropping difficulties on other group products such as Team Calendars or Team
Graphics.
HEADS UP! - In addition to the aspect ratio of
the product ordered, it is also important to consider the layout of the graphics
being used. One common issue when ordering Sports Composites is that on many of
the designs, the individual inset overlaps the top right corner of the group
picture. Now, who tends to be stuck in the back row on the ends of most sports
group pictures? That's right - coaches! One easy way to avoid this is to place
the coaches in the middle of the back row, thus leaving more room in the top
corners of the frame.
If you take care to consider these points when
shooting, you will save a lot of post-production work or
re-shoots!
