This conference, sponsored by Metro Phoenix Senior Resource group, will educate health care professionals in hospital settings as well as the community about various forms of dementia. We will be specifically addressing the diagnosis, treatment and management decisions of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Presentation Schedule

 

7:30-8:30am: Check-In and Sponsor Introductions

 

8:30-9:30am: Managing Alzheimer's disease by Helle Brand, PA with Banner Alzheimer's Institute  

 

Participants will be able to: 1. Identify standards for diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. 2. Discuss specific concerns related to the stages of Alzheimer's disease. 3. Identify appropriate medications for treatment of Alzheimer's disease 4. Discuss similarities and differences between forms of dementia.

 

9:30-10:00am: Break and Refreshments 

 

10:00am-11:30am: Mind-Body-Spirit Connection: Focused on Native American Culture by Helle Brand, PA and Filmer Lalio, New Mexico NAI Outreach Coordinator, both with Banner Alzheimer's Institute

 

Participants will be able to 1: Discuss features of each aspect of the mind body spirit connection 2. Address means by which each area can be addressed 3. Discuss both the individual and the community model for addressing the connection.  

 

11:30-12:30pm: Gourmet Boxed Lunch included with Registration

 

12:30-2:00pm: Working with Cultural Diverse Communities in the Management of Parkinson and Alzheimer's disease and Cultural Nuances of the Hispanic Family by Sandra Gonzalez, Family Care Consultant & Latino Outreach Specialist from the Alzheimer's Association Desert Southwest Chapter and Claudia Martinez, Hispanic Outreach Coordinator with the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center

 

Participants will learn to understand what it takes to provide culturally sensitive services to Hispanic families. Review the concept of diversity, its many different types and sub-divisions. Provide participants with the necessary tools to communicate effectively with Hispanic families.  Discuss specific topics of interest when serving patients and family members living with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson disease.

2:30-3:30pm: Managing Idiopathic Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonisms Part 1 by Naomi Salins, MD with the

Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center 

 

In this 2 part series participants will learn to: 1. Appreciate the motor, cognitive and affective deficits associated with Parkinson's disease. 2. Recognize the clinical features that may differentiate Parkinson's disease from other forms of Parkinsonism. 3. Understand the rationale for and methodology of medical and surgical management of Parkinson's disease.

3:45-4:45pm: Managing Idiopathic Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonisms Part 2 by Anthony Santiago, MD, Movement Disorder Neurologist with the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center
