FDA Reluctantly Admits Mercury Fillings Have Neurotoxic Effects on Children
|
For the first time, the FDA has issued a warning that mercury contained in silver dental fillings may pose neurological risks to children and pregnant women.
"Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses," reads a statement that has been added to the agency's web site. Is It Time To Learn How To Eat Again? |
|
The bad news: America has a sugar problem, which is growing into an epidemic of Type 2 diabetes.
The good news: The growth in Type 2 diabetes has led to increasing interest in proper nutrition and more balanced eating among many people, even those who are not diabetic.
Here are a few tips for a balanced dinner plate that can help diabetics and non-diabetics alike:
- Divide your plate into four quarters and fill one quarter with carbohydrates, choosing complex carbohydrates like brown rice and whole grains (sprouted are best).
- The second quarter of your plate should contain lean meats or healthy protein, like fish, poultry or a sensible red meat portion. Try to eat organic when possible as well as grass-fed beef.
- The last half of your plate should be filled with vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, carrots, mixed green lettuce, etc. Avoid starchy vegetables and look for a variety of color.
- As always, make sure your food is as whole, fresh and organic as it can be for what is in season.
A great way to better understand how healthy you are currently eating is keeping a food diary. Ask Dr. Ben or Dr. Sara for a food diary. |

Nutrition May Prevent Age-Related Blindness
|
A major cause of vision loss may be prevented with the correct nutritional supplementation. Research connecting nutrition to macular degeneration has eye researchers saying that balanced nutrition is a good idea for many people.
Macular degeneration is a major cause of age-related blindness in people of European ancestry. It affects 1.75 million people in the U.S. and may affect as many as 3 million by the year 2020.
In Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, scientists found that supplements of vitamin A, C, beta-carotene, zinc, xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin), and fatty acids (Omega-3s) may play a significant role in preventing macular degeneration. Please contact Dr. Ben or Dr. Sara for more information on how whole food supplements may be able to help.

Common Chemicals Linked To Infertility |
Your cookware and cleaning supplies could make it harder for you to have a baby.
Researchers have found that chemicals called perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) might be linked to delays in getting pregnant. PFCs are everywhere -- in Teflon cookware, shampoos, floor wax, food wrapping, carpet treatments and other cleaning products. PFCs are also present in air and water in the form of industrial waste from chemical plants.
The new study looked at more than 1,200 women when they were six to 12 weeks pregnant. If they reported that it took them longer than 12 months to get pregnant or if they used drugs designed to increase their chances of conceiving, they were considered to have infertility -- this is a generally accepted definition of infertility by experts in the field.
One kind of PFC, called PFOS, increased the odds of infertility anywhere from 70 to 134 percent. Another PFC called PFOA was linked to a 60 to 154 percent increase in the chance of infertility.
