Dear Superintendent and Friend:
Your office recently received a four-page, full color brochure from the National Council on Educating Black Children announcing the 2011 NCEBC Annual Convention and 25th Anniversary Celebration in Las Vegas, NV on April 28 to May 1, 2011.
I am contacting you today with a direct request for your involvement with NCEBC's efforts to nationally address and improve educational outcomes for our children, particularly our young black males. If you have not had an opportunity, please apprise yourself and your team of the latest data published by the Schott Foundation. Yes We Can: The 2010 Schott 50 State Report on Black Males in Public Education (Schott Foundation, August 2010) provides indexing, state-by-state, of the crisis we face as a nation regarding the graduation of black males. The foundation reported that 52% of our black boys drop out of school.
NCEBC's 2011 conference will devote three full days to focusing on effective strategies and solutions that address this crisis. If your school district is experiencing similar results for black males, I encourage you to attend, bring and/or send staff to participate in a critical conversation and national planning session on black males. It will be a sound and timely investment.
I hope you and your team will join your colleagues from across the nation in what will be a historic event in changing the direction of our black males.
With warm regards I remain.
Sincerely yours,

Dr. Claude Mayberry
National Board President
National Council on Educating Black Children
