GRADE 7 CHICKEN KASHERING

After learning about kashrut as part of the Chumash curriculum, the seventh grade students then had the opportunity to put their classroom learning into action and kasher chickens here at Yavneh. The day began with our students viewing a brief video prepared by the Empire corporation which detailed the entire process of making a chicken fit to eat.  From there, our students headed outside, where each student was given his or her own chicken to kasher.  The students then moved on to the process of hadacha (soaking the chickens for half an hour), melicha (salting the chickens), and hadacha shnia (a second rinse and soaking of the chickens).

Later in the day,

Rabbi Chaim Loike, rabbinic coordinator at the Orthodox Union and expert on birds and eggs, as well as instructor in practical shechitah at YU, addressed our 7th graders. Rabbi Loike explained kashrut issues of certain birds and the students were able to observe turtle doves, quail, a partridge, and finches.

LAG B'OMER

Although the fields were wet, Lag B'Omer was celebrated Yavneh style with learning and lots of fun.

As part of our Lag B'Omer programming, the Middle School students had the pleasure and privilege of hearing from Mr. Barry Spielman, father of our 8th grader Yadin, and a shaliach at the Jewish Agency.  Mr. Spielman spoke to the students about his own journey from Staten Island to Israel, about the wonders of the Modern State of Israel, and about how Lag B'Omer and our other chagim are enhanced by the atmosphere of the Jewish State.  Our students listed with rapt attention to Mr. Spielman's presentation and emerged with a more vivid sense of what tziyonut means to all of us.

Faculty vs. Student basketball games also took place with split results. The girls team beat the female faculty, while the the male faculty team took the boys team 49-47.

Finally, the Yavneh tradition continued with Yavneh's Famous Annual BBQ. Thank you to Terry and her staff and to the many many Yavneh parents who came to help and make the barbecue possible. Congratulations to Amanda Hanauer for her winning entry to the make your own hamburger contest. Thank you to Gotham Burger for sponsoring the contest and providing the winner with a gift certificate and T-shirts for the runners up.

YAVNEH ACTING CLUB PREFORMS AT TEANECK GENERAL STORE
SNOW WHITE.mp4
SNOW WHITE.mp4

The Yavneh Acting club, led by director Shelli Sussman, performed Snow White and the Seven Dwarves at the Teaneck General Store for a group of senior citizens as well as family. The play put a modern spin on the well-known fairy tell, and it allowed for the girls' creative talents to shine. The girls were very positively received, with one woman even asking to join the group! Following the play, Mr. Bruce Prince, owner of the store - and grandfather of Talya Wimpfheimer, one of the stars of the play - led a very interesting discussion between the students and the senior citizens about the differences between growing up in Teaneck in the 1940s and 1950s compared to today. Our students eagerly asked questions, and were fascinated to hear about life in Bergen County from so long ago. A great time was had by our students, and they thoroughly enjoyed this chesed opportunity.
