When the calendar page turns and a New Year is here, most of us tend to be reflective on the past - from whence we came, where we are today - to exploring where we hope to be.  How many of us have similar stories of purchasing a stationary bike or treadmill to kick off a new healthy new year of improved diet and exercise?  In many cases, by March the equipment is moved to a room's corner where it ends up serving as a clothes hanger, despite the good intention.  It is the nature of human behavior in all of us to seek immediate gratification and we tend to become impatient with the required hard work and length of time it takes to achieve goals.  

Yet, the human spirit has tremendous potential, and we see winners every day who keep going, who inspire us to take a long-term view.  We are also affected by unforeseen events for which plans must change... leading us in new directions. 

At year end, the media showcases significant events that marked the country during the past 12 months.  In 2011, there have been many world events, tragedies and celebrations which highlight the human condition.

And so it goes in the business of perfusion, we, too, change.  Over the past year I have blogged often about the challenges in healthcare, the events that affect the perfusion industry, celebrations of Trident's successes, and the consistency in which we serve heart patients in these everchanging times.  History is noted in our feature stories of the monthly Heartbeat, and past issues are available at our website's news page: www.tridenthealth.com/news  .

As we look forward into 2012, Trident celebrates its 24th year in business, operating under the same ownership.  Our legacy as a leading perfusion services company did not come without hard work and difficulty.  But I fondly recall some of Trident's history which led us to today:

In our earliest years, our business started with locums.  We quickly earned a reputation in the specialty area of ECMO coverage and 24 hour response to emergency situations.  One of our earliest locums accounts transitioned to become a long-term contract.  It was from this singular account transition that word-of-mouth referrals gained us other long-term hospital accounts (pediatric and adult).  From there and even now, our business is primarily long-term.  

We learned and grew and we recognize the need to always be flexible, prepared to refocus and reshape our business, and respond to where the need calls us.  Concurrently, it is essential that some things remain consistent and steadfast... our patient first philosophy, for example.  From there, we build upon the foundation.

Our focus in 2011 was on strengthening our administrative processes, continuing market research, increasing staffing, and strategizing to grow the business in 2012.  We introduced new clinical operations leaders to our team.  We updated our reporting information systems.  We established new and updated our existing quality policies and methods.  And along the way, we introduced ourselves to many new hospitals which we have had the pleasure to negotiate new business.
