Flu Season and
 Open Heart Programs

 - By Ralph E. Jordan, Trident Health Resources, Inc. CEO & President

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu and over 200,000 people are hospitalized each year due to influenza.  If you work in a hospital setting, you know how important it is to take measures to ensure you stay well and so do your  staff and your patients.

Some states have recently instituted mandatory H1N1 vaccinations for health care workers.   While this has become a current controversy among some health care workers (see Forum Discussion and take the poll on this civil rights debate at  Trident's sister website: www.perfusioncommunity.com), the vaccine is designed to eradicate the problem.

For now, prevention is important,  so avoid close contact with others, sneeze into your sleeve (not your hands) to keep germs from spreading.  If you use hand sanitizer, makes sure it contains 63% or more alcohol content  (or it is ineffective).  And of course, if your perfusion staff need to stay home sick, leaving you with  emergent staffing needs, call Trident for same day response!

And if you're looking for permanent staffing, consider that your Open Heart program may benefit from a no-obligation cost comparison analysis from Trident.  Whether you are currently managing your own department and staffing or are currently using a third party contractor, allow Trident Health Resources, Inc. to review options for you.  Call us directly, or complete a short cost-comparison form on our website, located HERE. We'll get back with you promptly.

A Brief Glimpse into the History of Cardiovascular Perfusion - Part 2
heart pump

The first heart-lung machine launched and was successfully used for the first time by John Gibbon in 1953.  You're looking at a picture of an early 1970s heart lung bypass machine (Source: Southern Hospitals, March 1975).  The Harvey Disposable Bubble Oxygenator is depicted on the left side of the photo.  The right side of the image features the Arterial Roller Pump Head, the Sump Suction Roller Pump Head and the Secker Roller Pump Head.

Did you know that in 1975 perfusionist salaries averaged $12,000 to $13,000 per year nationwide?  Today, according to the American Society of Extra-Corporeal Technology (AmSECT) , the average base salary for a recently graduated perfusionist is $50,000 to $63,000; for a certified perfusionist with 2 to 5 years experience, $65,000 to $75,000; 6 to 10 years experience, $69,000 to $90,000; and chief perfusionist, $80,000 to $100,000.

ln next month's issue of Heartbeat, we'll feature additional vintage photos and historical facts about the early days of perfusion... Stay tuned!
