Save the Date for the 2012 ASTPHND Annual Meeting
| | Make your plans now to join us for the 2012 ASTPHND annual meeting, Traversing Challenges and Building Partnerships for Change. The meeting will be held in picturesque Traverse City, Michigan at the historic Park Place Hotel. The meeting will begin on Sunday, June 10th and run through Tuesday, June 12th. New this year will be a Saturday pre-conference workshop with Maggi Adamek, Building and Working With Coalitions.
In addition, we are offering a post-conference training for Fruit and Vegetable Nutrition Coordinators focusing on the Let's Move Salad Bars to School program. This workshop is open to anyone who is interested and features Chef Timothy Cipriano, Executive Director of Food Services at the New Haven Public Schools, and Rodney Taylor, Director of the Nutrition Services Department at the Riverside Unified School District.

Workgroup Calls for Action on Obesity
| | Three organizations that are affiliates of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) are calling upon their members to work together to address the obesity epidemic facing our nation. ASTPHND, along with the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) developed this call to action.
The groups' statement says, "Together, we can align our skills, knowledge and resources to maximize efforts, reduce duplication and address gaps. Integration of efforts at the federal, state and local levels is important to stemming the obesity epidemic and improving public health." Click here to read the complete Call to Action.

ASTPHND Leaders Meet in Atlanta
| | In late February, the ASTPHND Board held its mid-year meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. On Tuesday, February 21, several Board members met with CDC- DNPAO representatives. The day included meetings on Salad Bars in Schools, Breastfeeding, Early Care and Education, and Sugar Drinks. The discussions generated ideas for greater collaboration between ASTPHND and DNPAO. The next day, the Board held a work session on the new five-year ASTPHND Strategic Plan. The Board will finalize the new Plan in June. On the third day of meetings, the Board had a fun and productive leadership skills building session. The Board will hold its second in-person meeting of the year at the Annual Meeting in Traverse City in June.

Call for Volunteer to Represent ASTPHND with NSRI
| | The National Salt Reduction Initiative (NSRI) works to decrease Americans' sodium intake as a way to decrease blood pressure and save lives. We are seeking an ASTPHND representative who will participate in the Initiative's quarterly conference calls and receive periodic emails. The purpose of the calls and emails is to learn about NSRI updates, local salt reduction activities, new research, and policy news. Interested? Please contact Lynda Alfred.

Annual Meeting Student Scholarship Winner Announced
| | The winner of the 2012 ASTPHND Annual Meeting Scholarship is Sarah Eichberger, RD. Sarah is a student in the Public Health Nutrition graduate degree program at the University of Minnesota. Her focus is on health disparities and sustainable food systems. Sarah was the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year for the Illinois Dietetic Association in 2010. ASTPHND Submits Comments on Sodium Reduction
| | In January, ASTPHND submitted official comments to the FDA and USDA on sodium reduction strategies. Our comments stated, "ASTPHND supports the approaches identified in the 2010 Institute of Medicine report, Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake in the United States, as these recommendations will have significant effects on making the healthy choice the easy choice for all Americans." Workplace Breastfeeding Success Stories

Every Mother, Inc. and Altarum Institute are working with the HHS Office on Women's Health to develop an online resource to showcase creative solutions for supporting employees who are nursing their babies. The resource will be available in Fall 2012.
Every Mother and Altarum are seeking success stories from businesses of all types. Specifically, these organizations are looking for examples of how workplaces developed solutions for both the time and space requirements of the federal nursing breaks law. Please submit your story to www.everymother.org/workplace. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

Sign Up a Colleague to be an ASTPHND Member
| | ASTPHND encourages you to bring in your co-workers as ASTPHND member s. There is no limit to the number of expanded members a state can have. Take a look at the ASTPHND membership page to view the definition of an expanded member.
There are many benefits to becoming an ASTPHND member. For example state agencies benefit when their staff members are active participants in ASTPHND. Involvement in ASTPHND offers:
- Great opportunities for leadership training.
- State visibility to national leaders.
- Knowledge of what other states are doing, how they are doing it, and learning opportunities to apply other state's programs and experiences in your state.
- Exposure to new resources.
- Examples of collaboration internally and at the community level.
In a nutshell, your active participation in ASTPHND can keep your state on the cutting edge. Be sure to ask your colleagues to send in a JPEG photo of themselves for our website when they submit their membership application.
