New Round of Salad Bar Mini-Grants
| | In December, the National Council of Fruit & Vegetable Nutrition Coordinators announced three recipients of the 2012 Salad Bar mini-grants. These $15,000 awards will support salad bar projects in New Mexico, Alaska and Washington. These grants are made possible through funding from CDC-DNPAO.
In New Mexico, the state Department of Health will work with the Human Service Department's Food and Nutrition Services Bureau and the Public Education Department's Student Nutrition Bureau to build a coalition, host a conference and develop a communication network to support the placement of salad bars in schools across New Mexico.
Alaska's project will bring together the state's Department of Health and Social Services Obesity Prevention and Control Program, Department of Education and Early Development Child Nutrition Programs, and the Division of Agriculture Farm to School Program to train school food service directors and staff on strategies to raise funds and implement successful salad bars throughout the state.
Washington will launch the SAFE (Safe and Fun to Eat) Salad Bars project to develop and implement a model communications plan to expand the number of salad bars in the state's schools. Project partners include the Washington Department of Agriculture, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Food Services Program, Coordinated School Health Program, and the state Health Department's Healthy Eating Active Living Program and Food Safety Program.

| | The primary objective of this survey of public health nutritionists was to help CDC determine the diet and nutrition biomarkers that are of greatest importance for public health chronic disease prevention and control. The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) will use the findings from the 2011 survey to guide its development of a pamphlet to accompany the Executive Summary of the second National Report on Biochemical Indicators on Diet and Nutrition in the U.S. Population. ASTPHND Completes Training Needs Assessment
| | ASTPHND conducts an annual survey of our members to determine their training needs and interests. We use the results of the Training Needs Assessment (TNA) to help us design sessions at the Annual Meeting as well as workshops, teleconferences and webinars throughout the year that best help our members gain the skills and knowledge they need to be leaders in our rapidly changing field.
Because the assessment results have been similar in the last three years, the TNA Committee decided not to survey the membership in 2011. Instead, the committee recruited a group of ASTPHND members to brainstorm speakers, content and approaches for each of the 2010 priority training needs. Click here to view the team's September 2011 report.
