Robin Stanton Publishes Editorial
on Breastfeeding Support
ASTPHND member and immediate past chair of the United States Breastfeeding Committee Robin Stanton published a guest editorial in the July 2011 edition of the Journal of Perinatal Education.  Robin's editorial is called, A Road Map for Change: Ensuring that Women Have Breastfeeding Support.

In her editorial, Robin wrote, "The launch of The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding provides an opportunity for a society-wide approach in removing barriers that make it difficult for many women to succeed. Childbirth educators are urged to use these action steps as a springboard to influence lasting change so that all women have the opportunity to breastfeed their children."

    F&V Council Surveys Coordinators on

Salad Bars to Schools Involvement

salad bar tomatoesIn August, ASTPHND  surveyed state fruit and vegetable nutrition coordinators to find out how active their states are in the Let's Move Salad Bar to Schools Initiative, how involved coordinators are in that effort, and what resources coordinators need to help move forward their state's salad bar program.

From the 31 coordinators who responded, we learned that while most were familiar with the Salad Bars to Schools Initiative, they were not actively involved with the program.  Most reported that there had not been salad bar trainings in their states.  Few coordinators have been involved in efforts to raise money for schools to purchase salad bars and in activities to generate support for and build awareness of the initiative.

Coordinators were very interested in our assistance in moving the initiative to the next level in their states.  They were particularly interested in having access to online guides and FAQs they could download and distribute as well as key messages and talking points.  They were looking forward to the next round of salad bar mini-grants, which ASTPHND will award in early 2012.

For more information and to view the complete survey results, contact Joan Atkinson.
