About ASTPHND
Call for Volunteers
The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is asking three or four ASTPHND members to participate in its Advisory Council for the 2nd National Report on Biochemical Indicators of Diet and Nutrition in the U.S. Population.  The NACDD is looking for members who have a strong understanding of biochemistry and nutrition and an understanding of how population-level biomarkers for diet and nutrition may influence human health and nutrition practice at the population level.

The Advisory Council will begin its work in the fall once the first drafts people working togetherof the CDC Nutrition Report are available.  Council members can expect to put in 1 to 2 hours per month for the first six months reviewing and commenting on the CDC Report drafts and then somewhat more time  for another six months as NACDD drafts its White Paper in response to the Report.  Members also will attend one face-to-face meeting in Atlanta to review the Report findings and discuss the public health program and policy implications for inclusion in the White Paper.

If you are interested in serving on this Advisory Council, or if you would like more information, contact Lynda Alfred, ASTPHND Consultant.

ASTPHND Seeking Two States for  MCH Pilot Collaboration Project
ASTPHND is looking for two states to participate in a short-term pilot project that will start this summer.  The project entails two selected states, with federal partner support, to begin identifying ways that states can best work collaboratively across funding streams (MCH, USDA and CDC) and across agencies to improve the nutritional wellbeing of the maternal and child health population.  The project will include ASTPHND consultant support, interactive training methods, skill-focused learning and a $5,000 stipend to accomplish the activities.  Strategies associated with collaboration and communication from the Blueprint to Improve Nutrition and Physical Activity will shape this project.  Click here for more information and to learn about the selection criteria.  The closing date to apply to participate in this project is June 17, 2011.

Join Us For a Fun Excursion at the Annual Meeting

We have two fun  options this year for our traditional Monday evening excursion.  ASTPHND and the National Society of Physical Activity Practitioners in Public Health (NSPAPPH) have each planned an event.  You can join either group for the Monday excursion.

  • NSPAPPH Walk to the Pubs.  Downtown Salt Lake City is home to a wide variety of eating SLC nightlifeestablishments and pubs.  Get to know your colleagues in a relaxed environment!  We'll meet in the lobby at 5:30 PM.  The pub walk is open to any NSPAPPH or ASTPHND attendee.
  • Beehive Cheese Creamery Tour and Dinner.  ASTPHND has arranged a trip to the Beehive Creamery for a tour and dinner.  In 2005, brothers-in-law Tim Welsh and Pat Ford left the fast-paced world of software and real estate seeking a more simple way of life as artisan cheese makers.  The cost is $40 per person which includes transportation and hors d'evouvre stations catered by Roosters.  Please note that you'll need to prepay for this excursion.  Please send a check for $40 to ASTPHND, PO Box 1001, Johnstown, PA  15907-1001.  If you want to pay by credit card, call Cyndi Atterbury with the card information, 814-255- 2829, ext 1001.  This excursion is open to guests.

Mini-Grants

In early may, The National Council of Fruit & Vegetable Nutrition Coordinators announced the five recipients of $15,000 grants.  The grants will go to support projects in:

  • Iowa to develop a training project at the School Nutrition Association of Iowa's Fall Nutrition Seminar.  This project is a collaboration between the Iowa School Nutrition Association, the Iowa Department of Education, and the Iowa Fruit & Vegetable Nutrition Coordinator.
  • Minnesota to develop a training project.  Included in the development of this project will be parents, students, and foodservice staff, along with two school districts and the state Fruit & Vegetable Nutrition Coordinator.
  • Missouri, where the University of Missouri Extension Service, the Missouri Farm-to-School Program, the Health Communication Research Center, and the Missouri Fruit & Vegetable Nutrition Coordinator will evaluate current salad bar programs that use local produce, market the Farm-to-School Program with school salad bar programs, and then train school food services staff.
  • Wisconsin, where the Wisconsin Departments of Public Instruction, Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and others will partner to evaluate two schools, one with an existing salad bar and one without with an aim to understand the current context of how salad bars are operating in schools.
