Two New Resources Are Available from Action for Healthy Kids to Help Youth Make Better Food Choices |
|
Action for Healthy Kids has released two resources based on the findings of their 2008 research report,
Helping Youth Make Better Food Choices: Perceptions, Barriers and
Promising Approaches Among Nutrition, Health and Public Health
Professionals. The survey includes the responses of members of the
Association of State and Territorial Health Nutrition Directors
regarding their experiences in guiding the children and youth they work
with to make food choices in keeping with the 2005
Dietary Guidelines for Americans' "Food Groups to Encourage,"
which include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat and fat-free
milk and milk products, while limiting their intake of "junk" foods
that contribute little or no nutritional value to their diets.
The resources developed from that research report include a 12-page guide,
Helping Youth Make Better Food Choices: Ideas By and For Nutrition, Health and Public Health Professionals Leading the Way,
which offers opinions of these leading professionals on how to address
the most common barriers to helping kids make more healthful food
choices. The guide recommends action-oriented steps to overcoming these
challenges, and suggests additional resources for related information.
Also available are three tip sheets targeted specifically to schools,
community organizations, and parents and caregivers, the latter in
English- and Spanish-language versions. These tip sheets present key
suggestions from the guide in a colorful, user-friendly format that
would work equally well as a handout or poster. Both resources are
available here
and on the ASTPHND website in the resource section.
A limited supply of hard copies are available. Please send a request via e- mail to: MakingBetterFoodChoices@actionforhealthykids.org.

ALL NEW 2009 Obesity Prevention in Public Health Course
|
|
The Center of Excellence for Training
and Research Translation (Center TRT) at UNC is offering a 5-day
training course August 23-28, 2009, at the Paul J. Rizzo Center in
Chapel Hill, NC, for state-level program coordinators working with
obesity and chronic disease prevention programs.
The ALL NEW 2009 Obesity Prevention in Public Health Course
is designed to enhance the capacity of state-level obesity
prevention coordinators to build and sustain partnerships, promote
policy change and mobilize communities. Specifically, the course aims
to enhance individual and organizational leadership and management
skills to better implement and sustain nutrition and physical activity
interventions.
Sponsored by the CDC's Nutrition
and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and other Chronic
Diseases, the newly designed course curriculum integrates strategies
for public policy and environmental change in states and communities
with leadership development for new and seasoned leaders of public
health nutrition, physical activity and obesity efforts. Content
includes a personal assessment of leadership style and values, an
exploration of the potential impact of these qualities, and development
of an individual leadership development plan. There will be
opportunities to learn from experts in leadership, obesity prevention,
and community development.
A limited number of scholarships are available for the 2009 Obesity
Prevention in Public Health Training Course. Scholarships include
course registration fees, room accommodations, meals, airfare, ground
travel, and gratuities. Open applications are being accepted until June 19. Please go here for more information.
