NANA Needs You!
Important & Time Sensitive News from the ASTPHND Advocacy Committee

Success Stories:
Currently, our partners at the National Alliance for Nutrition & Activity (NANA) are working hard to convince our legislators that CDC-DNPAO needs funding for all states to implement obesity prevention.  NANA is doing a terrific job on these efforts but legislators want to hear from states!  The ASTPHND Advocacy Committee would like to assist NANA in their efforts.  To do this, committee members encourage you to send NANA success stories about nutrition programs and policies that resulted from CDC-DNPAO funding. Legislators are eager to hear your success stories!  Please send your stories to NANA's Lauren McLarney, at lmclarney@cspinet.org.  Lauren will also provide guidance on format.

Stimulus Package:
The Advocacy committee has been working with NANA and other partners to monitor progress on the Obama Administrations Stimulus Package.  As a result of a huge outpouring of state level grass roots work, the Stimulus Package passed with several funding items for public health nutrition.  To assist ASTPHND members in understanding where to find public health nutrition topics within the Stimulus Package, the Committee drafted a document highlighting information about public health nutrition related funding.  The document is posted here.  The committee recommends that you visit this document periodically as it will change when new information is identified.  One example in the document is potential funding for school cafeteria equipment.  This may be an important improvement for states that are working to increase fruit and vegetable consumption.

How Would You Change Healthy People 2010 Objectives?
As you know, Healthy People objectives are the ten-year health priorities for our nation.  As the nation starts the work of revising the Healthy People 2010 (HP 2010) objectives, the state and territorial public health nutrition directors will contribute to this work.  Federal agencies value the input of state public health nutrition professionals.  ASTPHND wants to hear the opinions of members on the HP 2010 nutrition-related objectives so we can influence the 2020 objectives.

A form to review the HP 2010 Objectives and provide feedback is available on the ASTPHND website home page in the left column. Please take a few minutes to complete the form and send it to Karen Probert, Executive Director, at karen@astphnd.org.

Thank you.
