As part of the cooperative agreement with CDC Division of
Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity, ASTPHND organizes an Annual Training
Needs Assessment to help inform the focus, content and delivery of training and
educational opportunities for the coming year. This year, we added a section on
Membership to assist in developing and improving our Member Services.
Many thanks to the members of the Training Needs Assessment survey committee
for their hard work and expertise in crafting, disseminating, and summarizing
the results.

Committee members
Donna Speed, Shana Patterson, and Joan Atkinson met several times to complete
the outline and support materials for the December 3rd New F&V Nutrition Coordinator Orientation. This orientation was the second in a series
of three orientations for new F&V Nutrition Coordinators. Partners joining the orientation were
Elizabeth Pivonka (PBH), Reba Griffith (CDC), and Genevieve Polk (CDC). Also joining were members Landon Norton (OK),
Star Morrison (WY), Mary Ann Ellsworth (NJ), and David Rath (AR). Members provided testimony on their roles as
F&V Nutrition Coordinators. Four new
F&V Nutrition Coordinators joined the orientation - Debra Celnik (MD), Mary
Whitesell (FL), Laura Hormouth (IN), and Donna McDuffie (MN). Materials used for the orientation can be found here.
Membership Committee:
Committee members
Elaine Zervos, Donna Speed, David Rath, and Shana Patterson continue to work on
implementing the Council's Member Section of the 5-year strategic plan. With a mentoring system in place, the Membership
committee will begin working on the following strategies during their next
three meetings:
--> Develop mechanisms to
recognize members for Council committee work and/or long-term membership in
the Council. Plans to deliver the
following:-
Letter of appreciation to state health officers

Certificate for long-standing service awarded during ASTPHND annual
meeting
--> Provide a forum to discuss
and coordinate where needed, the Council and ASTPHND membership
activities. Develop the following:-
Activities for July Obesity Summit

Ambassador program for Council leadership

Nominating Committee:
Members David Rath
(Chair), Pat Kramer (MO), and Lynn Hellenga (MT) coordinated the components of
a joint training with the ASTPHND Governance committee. This is their fourth meeting this year in
preparing a slate for the 2009 ballot.
David is working with Sharon Sass (AZ), ASTPHND Governance Chair to
share the Council's list for potential recruits. The ballot will be developed and disseminated
by the middle of March 2009.
Communications Committee: Committee members
Elizabeth Fiehler (KY), Diane Beth (NC), and Amy Ellings (WA) worked to
finalize the components of the newly developed 'Partner Fact Sheet.' The fact sheet was designed by Graphic
Designer Lourdes Pogue. Lourdes worked to create and print the fact
sheet just in time to disseminate to the National F&V Alliance (NFVA)
Steering Committee during their November 20 meeting. The fact sheet is posted here.
The communications
committee also co-hosted their third F&V Nutrition Coordinator conference
call training on December 2nd at 1pm ET.
Over 40 members attended the conference call training. Also attending were representatives from
USDA, CDC, and PBH. Presenters included
members from New York, Hawaii,
and Utah. The focus of the call was implementing fruits
and veggies into the WIC food package. The
next conference call training will take place on February 3rd at 1:00pm
ET. During the call Council and partners
will provide updates on current and future work. All of the materials for the conference calls

Council's Executive Committee: Council Executive
Committee members Diane Golzynski (MI), Carol Voss (IA), Elaine Zervos (NY),
Mary Ann Ellsworth (NY), Star Morrison (WY), and David Rath (AR) will meet
face-to-face in Atlanta GA, February 5th and 6th. During that time they will participate in
training activities and work with the ASTPHND board on general business. Diane Golzynski (Chair) and Carol Voss
(Co-Chair) will visit CDC-DNPAO representatives with ASTPHND leadership.
NFVA Steering Committee:
On Thursday, November
20th Carol Voss (IA), Co-Chair of the Council and Joan Atkinson traveled to DC
to attend the annual NFVA Steering Committee meeting. Here are agenda items with highlights:
USDA
Developing a new
division titled 'Office of Strategic Initiatives, Partners & Outreach'
OSIPO. USDA looking to secure partnerships within this new office.
Successful funding of
the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program
Marshall Matz
Matz chaired Obama's
Rural Outreach committee
and is a lawyer who has represented school nutrition interests. Spent five years as
general counsel to the Senate Select Committee on
Nutrition and two years as special counsel to the Senate Agriculture Committee.
Gov. Vilsak (IA) is a candidate for Secretary of
Agriculture
Senator Harkin to
lead a working group tasked with crafting the prevention and public health
components of the health care reform bill. Visit Harkins website for more

Obama has a huge
commitment to science - science driving decisions.
USDA Transition team led by Bart Chilton and Carole Jett.
Members include: David Lazarus, Deputy
National Rural vote director for the Obama campaign; also legislative assistant
to Richard Durbin. Dallas Tonsager,
member of the Farm Credit Admin Board, USDA state rural development director
(SD).
SRC (State, Regional & Community) Subcommittee of the NFVA
On behalf of the SRC
committee membership, Joan Atkinson made recommendations to the NFVA Steering
members to do the following & as a
result, all members agreed to participate and support SRC:

Present their
resources and updates during monthly F&V Nutrition Coordinator conference
call trainings
-
SRC may become a
subcommittee of the Council's Communications committee - Steering members
support the idea.

SRC will serve as a
two-way communication venue for partners and FV Nutrition Coordinators
-
Joan Atkinson will
work with Produce Marketing Association (PMA) to identify methods to secure a
scholarship opportunity for a Coordinator to attend the PMA conference.

Members reviewed the
content and metrics for updating the NAP.
Each section was
reviewed to identify measurable outcomes.
Partners agreed to
provide data that supports progress on each strategy.
Some sections of the
NAP will be revised to reflect current trends in fruit & vegetables such as
adding strategies for sustainable agriculture.
