Alistair BuddReport on Informal Meeting of
Visiting Christian Science Nurses

by Alistair Budd

Fourteen VCSN's (Visiting Christian Science Nurses) were represented at the 2011 Cedars conference (ten from US, one each from Switzerland, UK, Australia, South Africa). An informal meeting for VCSN's was organized during the CSNN conference. Many other conference attendees also gathered to learn more on how VCSN's operate worldwide.

All VCSN's said it is essential to educate the Board and the Field about Christian Science nursing. Encourage Board members to take an intro level class and extend this invitation to all branch church members. This is the best way to enlist support for Christian Science nursing in any area.

group picture VCSNsSome VCSN Services operate a "no-fees" system, including Houston and NJ. This works because donations from individuals and churches have increased to the point where income from fees is no longer necessary. VCSN's have worked hard in these areas to gather support by giving talks/workshops on Christian Science nursing in branch churches.

Some VCSN's operate from a care facility (e.g. Broadview, Lynn House, Charton Manor) and this appears to work smoothly. The care facility may provide transport, supplies, equipment, staff, etc., to support VCSN's. Many care facilities send student Christian Science nurses to work with the VCSN as part of their preparation for Journal-listing.

There seems to be a variety of approaches to administration of VCSN Services. Some have minimal paperwork, other have a more elaborate and detailed system. Only the London VCSN Service (in UK) is subject to regulation and inspection by a local health-care authority.

All VCSN Services operate a 7-day, 24-hour service. Some VCSN's find it easier than others to find back-up Christian Science nurses. Most VCSN Services are willing to employ non-Journal-listed Christian Science nurses provided they have had appropriate training and have been mentored on the case by the VCSN. The initial visit to a patient must always be by a Journal-listed Christian Science nurse. All VCSN's seem to provide pastoral care (friendly visits) at no charge and this is a vital aspect of the VCSN's ministry.

Everyone who attended the VCSN's meeting at the Cedars conference found it helpful and instructive. It's hoped that VCSN's will communicate, share ideas and support each other as a result of this meeting.
