She then told the group about the "Second Aide" kits that the staff carried when going on outings away from the camp. (At CedarS camps, the first aid is God.) The counselors also carry walkie-talkies as does the Camp Director, Christian Science practitioner on site and Camp Christian Science nurse. She told us just how a situation with a Christian Science nurse would be handled at camp.

 

We then had a tour of the Christian Science nursing section of PAL [Practitioners Are Loving] House. We got a glimpse of what happened in an actual Christian Science nursing situation involving a camper that needed to come to PAL House for Christian Science nursing care. A role playing situation had been set up for us with one of the CedarS staff acting as an injured camper. The "camper" arrived with two counselors with him and the first question was if the camper had stopped to see the Christian Science practitioner prior to coming to see the Camp Christian Science nurse. The answer was in the affirmative. Maggie as the Camp Christian Science nurse then provided care for the "camper"-asking him about his day, the meals, and things he/she remembered from the "practitioner talks" and/or power hour while she took care of the injury. After she had completed the care she talked to the counselors about any follow-up care they might need to be aware of. Follow up care by her was done unobtrusively by having the counselor return the child to PAL House if it was deemed there might be a continuing need or if there was no need she would touch base with the child at mealtimes just to see how he/she was doing.

 

Maggie and the Camp Director then answered questions posed by the Christian Science nurses at the workshop.
