Christian Science Nurses' Training
with Sandra Block-Effron |
This July, Journal-listed Christian Science Nurse Sandra Block-Effron moved into the position of Director of Christian Science Nursing for High Ridge House, a Christian Science nursing facility in Riverdale, New York. Several months ago, while she was the Instructor of Christian Science Nurses' Training, Sandy spoke with CSNCN Board Member Bonnie Mitchinson about the spiritual qualities needed in those seeking Christian Science nurses' training and her expectations for the future of this training at High Ridge House. Bonnie: Sandy, can you share with us what's going on with Christian Science nurses' training at High Ridge House? Sandy: The classroom portion of our Christian Science nurses' training has been suspended. We want to continue this but it isn't obvious when that will start. The mentoring portion of the Christian Science nurses' training is on-going by our current experienced staff of Christian Science nurses, recently joined by our new Home Christian Science Nursing Coordinator/Mentor Suzanne Lovins. Mentoring is such an important part of nurturing the Christian Science nurses. The less experienced Christian Science nurse/student should be able to gain "the practical wisdom necessary in the sickroom" and be able to give "proper care" with mentoring guidance.
It is also important to cherish Christian Science nurses as they practice communicating in a loving, tactful and gracious manner. Bonnie: What do you feel are the spiritual qualities most needed in a Christian Science nursing student? Sandy: Spiritual poise is very important. This means being unflappable when facing challenging situations. To that, I would add graciousness, stamina, flexibility, and the quality of listening. The ability to turn to God for answers when dealing with problems is vital. A Christian Science nursing student should learn to stand firm in the truth, but impart it gently.
