  PUTIN

This young man didn't get along very well early in school. He enjoyed movies about secret agents, excelled in judo, and though from humble means attended law school specializing in international law. After law school, he attended KGB training in 1975 and a year later received his first commission with counterintelligence and then moved right into undercover intelligence work. Until 1985 he promoted quickly to the Fifth Directorate which smoked out political dissenters. He was then stationed in Dresden Germany where we pick him up in this Perpetual excerpt. Greetings!

TOP

I hope you had a great summer. For those of you that have been waiting for digital -- Perpetual has gone Kindle and Nook. Take a look! Perpetual on Kindle tighterAnd if you still want a hardback version, I've seen it online new for as low as $19.37 -- more than a $9 saving -- and used for $8.00.

As a reader, I suppose I'm a traditionalist and am always encouraged when hardback novels continue to sell, or, just seeing a youngster reading a new release. As I travel I hear responses like this about paper and ink.

"I like the feel of a the hard cover of a book, the breeze of the pages as I flip through it. The sound of the paper as I turn the page."  --24 year old at Coffee Shop in Nashville

I hope we we won't have to one day say, "Hey, remember books? Like we do with vinyl records, or cassettes. But, hey,  have you heard that "vinyl" is coming back? Break out your record player! Peter Carl Goldmark (the LP and color TV) would be proud.

So, what do you think? Digital reading is here to stay, but will it overtake the printing press? And when? In Perpetual Book 3, Matthew -- whose parents, grandparents and ancestors depended on the sale of forestry products to vertically integrated industry like newsprint -- has a discussion with a NY Times reporter, Kip Ackerman, The Prince of Conspiracy Theories, about his industries demise. You're doing it now. Reading digitally. So, I suppose it was inevitable that Perpetual would take a cyber leap onto the bookshelves of Kindle (Amazon) and Nook (B&N) -- even into your Smart phone.

Perpetual is moving up on the search engines -- and you can usually find it by simply typing Perpetual, or my name (humble shuffle of feet). Wouldn't you think that the word Perpetual would have been overused? An ISBN search in 2000 revealed no other suspense, mystery or action novel, or movie under the same banner. Shh, don't tell anyone. So, the franchise began! Will it end with Perpetual X 2090? Well, that's the big series question, the premise: If we don't solve our energy and environment issues now, where will we be in the year 2090. And the converse. Will it be the end? Or, will that be just the beginning?               [Authors Grin].

Did you see the movie, The Help? Highly recommended. This was a novel, adapted to a screenplay and then onto the silver screen, right? Epic. Right? Okay, put your 3D reading glasses back on,  this part is encrypted: Perpetual readers, I hope to soon reveal some exciting news about Perpetual the Screenplay and Perpetual the Movie (2012). Drop me an email and I'll tell you what I can -- on more secure channels. Estebanez and Agent Flannigan want to keep a lid on intel a bit longer, but if you are already an insider, then you might need up to date information to help uncover the conspiracy? Right? More on Perpetual the Movie (2012) in development, in the next HR.

The Not So Funny CRITICS CHOICE

Wall Street Falling
 Apathy

Comment: It's apparently difficult for Congress, the Senate, and the Executive branch to focus on other important agenda items when they have the economy crashing down all around them, again. So, I fear for the Pickens Plan (at least in the short run) and other initiatives that are focussed on moving the U.S. away from our foreign oil addiction. Will energy independence get tabled again? Will the renewable energy conversion topic be left behind, again? Probably. In the meantime, let's hope that all the real Cameron T. Jackson's, and Matthew Eaton's in our world keep slogging forward to research, develop and bring to market cost effective clean sustainable renewable solutions. What you and I can do is push our local, state and federal officials to keep alive the conversation about getting off our addiction to foreign oil, and to support entrepreneurs that are focussed on alternative energy -- the time to act is now.

Stay tuned for more Picken's Plan information next HR.  Oh, and you might note that in this HR's conspiracy report below, one of the top twenty of all time was not a surprise. Many think it's a primary theme underpinning the Perpetual series. It certainly has historical bearing.

Alternative Energy Snapshot on Solar and Wind

Alt Energy two

PLEASE LIGHT MY WAY, MR SUN, OR CARRY ME AWAY

WITH THE NEXT WIND    ---BH

~focus on alternatives~

Is a solution in our lifetimes as perplexing of a puzzle as it looks to the average citizen?  Unfortunately, the answer is yes. As I noted above, as soon as a more pressing problem takes over the headlines, alternative renewable sources of energy become back page news and "next" session priorities. this has been the case since the 1950's. Here is a snapshot from a journal entry post-awards ceremony.

                 Solar and wind

Large utility-scale wind farms are beginning to dot landscapes all over the world adding the power of the wind to our fuel mix.  But for all the good they do, wind farms also bring with them a host of new challenges for the wind farm operators that maintain the turbines and the utility operators that are taxed with incorporating intermittent wind power onto the grid.Solar power is often criticized as being too costly to allow for mainstream adoption; however, survey after survey indicates that Americans support solar energy and want more of it.  At the same time, U.S. states put incentives in place, then immediately scale them back or alter them when market conditions change.  This makes the complex regulatory environment for solar power almost as perplexing as the financial and political barrier that already exists.

Taken at face value renewable energy seeks to replace fossil fuels with renewable sources of energy.  Yet as this industry has developed it has become clear that such a large energy transition could provide even more societal and community benefits.  Jobs, low-cost electricity from free-fuel, community building, and energy independence are all side-benefits that result from the large-scale adoption of renewable energy.

 Economic Forecast

AUGUST MACRO ECONOMIC Picture

(I was going to include the micro picture,

but it disolved before I could get it uploaded)

KIPLINGER

Although we think growth will continue, the economy is just one shock away from another recession. A second straight quarter of meager growth is raising concerns. Most startling in the numbers released by the Commerce Department is a revision that takes first quarter GDP after inflation to only 0.4% growth, from a previous estimate of 1.9%. The second quarter estimate is 1.3%.

History shows there's reason to worry. Since the 1940s, when GDP growth over a 12-month span slows to a crawl of 2%, the economy usually slides into a subsequent recession. That's understandable. At that pace of growth, the economy becomes much more vulnerable to a shock such as sustained increases in the price of oil and gasoline or a spike in interest rates. Once - in the mid-1990s - that pattern was broken. Over the past 12 months, GDP has increased by a mere 1.6%.

Barring a jolt, we expect growth over the course of this year to come in at just about 2%, with an uptick to a 3% rate of growth for the third quarter. The chief reason: Increased production of cars in the July-September quarter. Auto output downshifted dramatically after the first quarter earthquake that hit Japan. The tremors curbed production at Japan's carmakers and parts suppliers, and that disruption sliced about one percentage point from second quarter GDP in the U.S.

Moreover, the impact of a series of blows - including severe weather during the spring, high oil and gasoline prices, political gridlock and worry about the collapse of the euro zone - will fade in the second half of 2011. There are already a few signals of potential improvement. Initial claims for unemployment insurance last week fell below 400,000 for the first time since April. And a recent Conference Board survey shows that though consumers are in a sour mood now, they expect better conditions in six months.

Problems certainly remain. Housing, while showing some signs of a bottom, is so weak that it's unlikely to add much to the economy until sometime next year. Cuts in the workforce of state and local governments are removing a steady source of consumer spending. What growth there is comes from business investment in software and equipment and from exports. Investment increased 5.9% and export growth contributed about half of the GDP increase in the quarter.

Note that the Commerce Department also recently made its annual update to recent years' figures. The latest numbers show an economy weaker than advertised at the time. During the recession that included 2008 and half of 2009, GDP shrank 5.1%, worse than the previous calculation of a 4.1% decline. Among other revisions: GDP in 2009 fell by 3.5%, not the earlier figure of 2.6%; in 2010, the economy grew by 3%, not 2.9%; and 2009 corporate profits were revised up by $104 billion in 2009 and $175.3 billion in 2010.

Such revisions are common as Commerce Department bean counters get more complete data from annual surveys by retailers, manufacturers, the Internal Revenue Services and other sources.

They Took SHERGAR!

I chose today's HR Conspiracy Featurette about Ireland's great racehorse, Shergar, because I knew very little about it until today. On February 8, 1983, a group of men wearing balaclavas and armed with guns turned up at the Ballymany Stud Farm in Co Kildare, Ireland and took a hostage - Jim Fitzgerald, the stud's head groom. "We've come for Shergar," they said. "We want 2million for him." Shergar was arguably the greatest racehorse to have ever lived winning the Epsom Derby in 1981 by a record ten lengths. Twenty-five years after he was kidnapped from Ballymany the mystery of exactly what happened to him after he was snatched that night still lingers. There are many theories as to what ultimately happened to the great steed. One is that the IRA took the Shergar and then he got sick and died and then they were too embarrassed to admit their blunder.

SHERGAR

Another theory is that Colonel Gadaffi, who had a passion for race horses, and guns, had the horse stolen due to a gun deal gone bad, then fell in love with Shergar and kept him in his own personal stables. Another is a combination of the two that the IRA kidnapped the horse for Gadaffi in return for weapons. Another suggests that the New Orleans Mafia took Shergar as payment on a gambling debt owed by known horserace enthusiast Jean Michel Gambet who was found murdered in a remote Kentucky valley. The mob was apparently still owed a horse from Shergar's bloodline. Each studding fee was worth over $160,000.00 US. So, they just took the source. Shergar's jockey, Walter Swinburn says that he doesn't think he'll ever know the truth, but that he hopes Shergar didn't suffer.

A BEAR IS REBORN   June 12, 1987

He couldn't sleep last night. The young man, not quite thirty, finished 200 each of crunches, dips and pushups kicked his legs up between his arms and sat with elbows on his knees. He reached for a towel and put it around his neck. His specialty in Germany was monitoring the movement of foreigners, particularly agents, politicians and persons of interest from the U.S. and the U.K.

He'd been stationed in Dresden, East Germany for two years. What bothered his sleep was that last night he'd read a transcript of a speech, one of hundreds he'd read this year alone, and could not get out of his head that the beginning of the end had already begun.

He looked at the time on one wall and went to the corner of his private gym, a ten by ten windowless basement room below his office of the same dimensions but with one window. He turned on the television which had a satellite link to America's NBC News but there was little about President Reagan's speech later today from the Brandenburg Gate near the Berlin Wall. He needed to leave Dresden by 9AM to make the 239km drive toward Berlin and then west a few miles to the Gate. He'd called his handler -- one of the most respected Cold War undercover KGB agents on both sides of the refrigerator. Ivan trusted his judgment but said to keep a low profile, that Chairman Gorbachev wanted a hands off approach on anything to do with President Reagan. That's the problem, the agent thought. That's the problem.

In the shower as the luke warm water cascaded over his taunt body he thought about how his country's influence would be hampered by today's theater, appropriately performed by a former Hollywood actor. The script had already been written and he was shocked that his own General Secretary of the Communist Party would lay down like a submissive feline rather than rear up like the great bear of our forefathers. It was a mistake to become friends with this president. His mentor and KGB handler, Ivan Mikhailovich also had an affinity for Reagan. It was a mistake, an anesthetic.

If his source in the White House was right, the cowboy actor was going to embarrass the General Secretary and all of Russia. Apparently Reagan's own Chief of Staff, Howard Baker, and National Security Advisor, Colin Powell was against the harshness of the language. He leaned both arms against the tile and put his head between his arms. If there were anything he could do, he'd do it. But he'd bide his time and one day, he and like minded true Soviets would have another opportunity. "I swear it." He said, pounding both fists against the wall, plaster and tile falling to the black cement. Pain surged through his arms. He turned off the water, toweled, dressed and stepped out into the warm sun. He joined his comrades at their black BMW sedan, one other KGB agent, Serg Kanarreff and two Stasi East German secret police who were feared maybe even more than the KGB.

The KGB agent, feeling like his favorite dog who his father castrated because of all the new pups in Leningrad, while Kanarreff drove, sat in the passenger seat and watched a Mercedes through his mirror. It had been on their tail since passing from East Berlin to West Berlin at the border check station.

An hour later the five men in the BMW arrived at the ancient Brandenburg Gate west of Berlin to see the pomp and circumstance one might expect at a kings inauguration. Now two Mercedes were on their tail.

"Do you believe this Vladimir?" Kanareff asked. "I hope there will be jobs for your German comrades at the Kremlin when this is all over."

Vladimir Putin felt ill. He felt the same pain in his gut when the U.S. under Reagan began a defense buildup with short-range nuclear missiles. "Conceal your weapons, again." He ordered. "We are going to be stopped." Their vehicle had compartments under the floor-mats. All five men stored their service weapons. One black Mercedes pulled in front of them, and the other behind. Vladimir was sure they were Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), the West German secret service. Two plain clothed agents and four Berlin Police officers surrounded their car. The BND man at the driver's window asked them for their papers. After review the other BND agent leaned on the window inches from Vladimir's face and said, "Maybe we should shoot you all now and save the American president the trouble?" He looked in the backseat at the three Stasi men and said, "I would kill the KGB agents very quickly, but you three, you would beg for me to finish you." Nobody in the car spoke. Just stared straight ahead.

The agent at the window said, "There is a roped off square on the promenade, farthest from the Brandenburg Gate - for the communist visitors. You will have to go through metal detectors of course. I'm sure you were not foolish enough to bring your service weapons?"

Kanareff, the KGB agent driving, smiled and said, "Of course not."

As this was an impromptu visit by the American President on his way to the G-7 Summit Meeting in Venice, Italy, the security was lame, in Vladimir's estimation. He could have carried a bazooka in here, he thought. He took his seat with his observer comrades in the roped off Promenade "for the communists" and waited for the words that he knew would somehow redirect his life and the future of his entire country. He looked at his watch, it was 2PM. An estimated of 50,000 West German's were in attendance. The movie star spoke:

We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace.

Here it comes, Vladimir thought. He was not angry. He was resolute.

If you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate.

The President paused for effect.

                        Mr. Gorbachev,

He paused again.

Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

The crowd rose and cheered. It roared for an unbearable time. Vladimir just wanted to leave. But he endured the rest of the speech.

As I looked out a moment ago from the Reichstag, that embodiment of German unity, I noticed words crudely spray-painted upon the wall, perhaps by a young Berliner, "This wall will fall." Beliefs become reality. Yes, across Europe, this wall will fall. For it cannot withstand faith; it cannot withstand truth. The wall cannot withstand freedom."

Since Vladimir had a copy of the speech, he was not surprised at this or the next portion of the speech where Reagan called for the U.S. and Soviets to end the arms race by eliminating the production of all new nuclear weapon projects.

When Chancellor Helmut Kohl took the podium, KGB Special agent Vladimir Putin stood with his four comrades and left the promenade. He remained in Dresden for one more year before being called back to Moscow. On November 9, 1989 the wall began to fall. In 1990 Ronald Reagan returned to take a few hammer swings.

Chancellor Kohl was quoted years later as saying what a monumental moment it was to stand behind President Reagan when he demanded that Gorbachev tear down the wall. Something he would never forget.

Something Vladimir Putin would also never forget. Never.
